Hard deadline or trade Marner and contend this year

Created by: blowing_the_zone
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2019
Published: Aug. 23, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ferris is told that either Mitch is signed to one of the existing offers and ready to go for game one of season or he can sign the AM contract and be traded the same day. It's his choice based on whatever his priorities are.

Spurgeon picked up in December similar to the Muzzin trade but with retention given he would likely be a pure rental. Bracco given time in the top 9 with pp2 duty while Hyman is on the shelf in the hopes of pumping his tires before the trade.

I like their chances this year with this roster if it all came to pass..

Besides, Ferris is the agent for both Hall and Marner.. just think of all the quid that he'd get all at once while he plays two of his biggest fish for his own benefit!

Its basically Hall for Marner and Ceci for Vatanen and that second part is particularly not good imo. I think you are better off just moving Marner for Hall.

I think the easiest solution is to just sign Marner... is 600k savings really worth it?

Capwise this year absolutely. And why 600k savings? Marner is not getting Matthews money when he is signed.

It would be. But so far there's been nothing easy about it.

It's obviously a theoretical proposition, but I like the idea of telling Marner he can have his AM money just not in Toronto. How would Ferris spin that?

And me thinks it would suit Ferris just fine to milk both Hall and Marner at the same time.. I'd love to see Dreger report on that.

You should do a follow-up thread for next year. Would you re-sign Vatanen, Berrie or Muzzin? Ig so who? Or do you go the FA route? Or trade route to fix our D?...very curious to see your version of the 2020-2021 leafs squad.

I'm a sick man Sign' em. I can't think that far ahead ..to hell with it all! The leafs win this year, we party for a month straight, deal with the follow up month long hangover, and then prepare for the next 50 yr drought..

But assuming Sandin and Lily are ready for duty next year (which they should be) and Dertmott comes in cheap on a bridge (which he should) there would be cap for at least one of the ufa d (off the top of my head). Plug in a cheap rd vet and things should be workable. And the top 9 forwards would be locked in moving forward..

A Hall for Marner trade seems kinda like a DeRozan/Kawhi deal. Why not? That seemed to work..

Like I just think that there's a 0% chance of that happening.
For starters; Hall > Marner and Vatanen > Ceci

Secondly, he said sign Marner to Matthews money, then trade him and extend Hall for JT money (600k in the difference) Might as well just sign Marner to either of those contracts or whatever he gets instead.
They can give Marner 10m and they'll be fine

Very interesting take on this season. I've been thinking about this season and the more I think about it I feel they won't be able to contend with the current injuries in mind. Infact, one more critcal injury and then what?

Actually yeah I too would like to see @blowing_the_zone 's vision for next season. Wonder what he would do with the D especially.

2 yrs difference on the term, AM is a 5 yr deal. JT a 7. Its more than a 600k savings. Regardless, Mitch isn't getting that deal in Toronto.

But I agree with you, Hall>>Marner and Vatanen > Ceci. But is Hall resigning in Jersey? I doubt Vatanen does with Subban and Severson there. Mitch would fit the fit the core age in NJ. The difference in the Ceci /Vat deal is the having control of Richy Mitch moving forward if Hall is thinking of moving on as a ufa. Ceci gets dumped next year. It's not that far out there.

Anyways, the game here is what would Mitch do if he could get his AM contract, just not in Toronto? How would they spin that? And how happy would Ferris be to play his two biggest fish at the same time?

Yeah but that depends on whether you believe Marner is worth AM money. Obviously some of us don't believe that but there's plenty of people here that do.

In this scenario Marner gets his money just not in Toronto. Some people come into Leafs ACGM's complaining about the talented young Marner not getting AM money...well here is a scenario in which he gets it. If Marner is as talented as people seem to believe then why not this kind of trade.

Because Hall > Marner and Vatanen > Ceci still.. You're not signing Hall to JT money either, it'll be Panarin money which, is Matthews money smile

You don't give yourself enough credit! Hahaha if the leafs win the city of Tarana would just be getting over their hangover from the Raps chip lol. If the leafs won tho it would be one hell of a party/hangover lol.

Your right, Sandin and Liljegren will be ready to go and Dermott likely doesn't break the bank either, I was just more interested in who “you" would like to see or who you see Dubas going after?

Demar for Leonard would be like adding Bergeron's game to McDavid IMO there is no comparable player in the NHL. I literally watched every second of every Raptors game this past year because I knew it was going to be a magically epic “won" and done season. But Hall would be a great addition.

You're absolutely right! So many people on here complain that Marner should get Matthews money but when a trade is proposed where he gets AM34 money but on another team all of the sudden it's a big hell no...lol.

I know you asked @TanSor, but I think Minny would do it at the deadline ONLY if they can't come to terms on an extension. But hey that's just my opinion.

Yes. It's called "calling out the BS"
That's when you realize people are just simply Leafs hating/trolling instead of giving an honest valuation of a trade/contract ETC.

Are you okay with this cost to get Spurgeon??
Add in the possibility of him gone as UFA too.

I think my expectations for a Spurgeon trade will never be met. The guy is so damn good, but you don't really realize it until you've watched him a bunch. There aren't many outside of MN who know how good he is (aside from the many on here that I've preached to among others) which makes his trade value pretty much trash on this site. This trade certainly isn't bad, and probably what we would get as a deadline deal, but overall I'd still be unhappy trading the best defenseman we've had in franchise history (yes, I truly believe that) for this package. And that's not to say this package is bad, because there's some solid pieces there, I'd just want more quality over quantity. Guerin has been very busy already (he made a trade today) so I'm wondering if we'll find out Jared's fate sooner rather than later in the season.

Personally no I'm not. I was just saying from Minnesota's perspective I think that they would be fine with that trade.
