Oilers side of Bonino trade suggested by herzausstein

Created by: Oilyboy
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 23, 2019
Published: Aug. 23, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For 2 years of Bonino at 3.1 mil...I think the Oil take this.

He should fit as a solid 3C and can dependably win draws, something the Oil don't have. Frees up Nuge to do more offensive work and zone starts.

Really? You haven't realized that the Oilers have zero surefire top 6 wingers so Drai has had to move to LW...and that that is why the only thing any Oilers commentator and management is talking about right now as far as fixing in the immediate is the worry over the 3C position?

Why not acquire proper wingers and have deeper lineup? I mean I dont wanna sound bad or anything but McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH should play on separate lines with proper developed and signed wingers to make the lineup as deep as possible.. This is not a crap talk from me. I want the best for Oilers to finally succeed.

Sure, longterm that might be nice, but creating those 3 functioning lines any time soon with the wingers we have (and even if one more middle six wing was added) is a longshot. Also, imo, RNH play in the top 6. When he was more of a 3C in the playoff year, it clearly hurt his ability to produce. He needs to be put on an offensive line, not an absolute shut down line. Further, there seem to be a strange amount of 3C's names floating around as gettable (Bonino, Eakin etc.) for perhaps cheaper than a top 6 winger. The other reality is that Nuge and McD are not great in the faceoff dot, so a guy like Bonino could really help with that.

I think the route back to a functioning group of forwards is more easily created by leaving Drai on McD's wing where he is best, and adding a good defensive 3C who can form a shutdown line with Granlund and Archibald or Kassian to allow Nuge's line to get softer, more offensive minutes.

Orr.... The Oilers have the centre depth that should allow them to have three scoring lines, and one shut down line. Forget the concept of 2nd and 3rd lines; they should have a first line with McD, and two more scoring lines lead by Drai and RNH. That's really what the Oilers should strive for. The game is getting faster and faster with more emphasis on scoring. The league and rules are working against enforcers and defensive lines, and will continue to do so. The NHL is going to continue to place more emphasis on scoring. As such, with the centre depth the Oilers have, the should really be having three scoring lines, and an "energy line" or... a "shut-down" line; really... just a line that can hold it's own until one of the other lines is rested enough.

Again, this is in a perfect world, which... is far from the one Oilers fans live in. The Oilers will continue to struggle for at least one more year. Next summer will be huge for Holland and the foreseeable future success of this organization. Not much to be done this year.

You guys are forgetting the fact that:

A. The oilers have no money to pay for top 6 wingers, much less 4 of them.
B. The oilers have no more time to dillydally before one of the big 3 ask out (Nuge most likely), they HAVE to make the playoffs.
C. The oilers have raw pieces that have top 6 potential due for a promotion from Bakersfield (Benson, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi if he wasnt playing diva).

The oilers need as much firepower to keep McDavid producing, and that's by keeping the 2nd star in Drai also happy by being on 97's wing.
Nuge is at home on the 2nd line. He's too good for 3rd line minutes. He needs to anchor the 2nd line.
Neal is here now and he won't get tied down by anchor Lucic or unripe Puljujarvi.

Neal + Connelly should've been ideal as wingers for Nuge but things don't always turn out the way you want.
Neal + Chiasson will have to do for now.

Lastly, much easier to find a 3C than a 2C. AND they dont cost $6M.
