I think we both know Laine would cost an Arm and a leg

Don't think it's enough for Ehlers. Fleury isn't the prospect he used to be (probably a good #5/6 D but not the 1st or 2nd pairing guy everyone thought he'd be), Martinook isn't anything special, and that pick likely isn't a lottery pick.

Fleury is 22 to think this is his ceiling is shortsited and misinformed, he'll be a 2nd pairing guy, but Carolina is the wrong team to get that chance because of the already loaded blue line they have plus guys like Priskie and Bean who can fight for those spots too, somewhere like Winnipeg out of the way would fix that. Winnipeg also don't have a lot of leverage, they don't have enough cap space to realisitically resign Laine and Connor, so this taked 6 mil away and gives some good futures in return for him, I didn't make this but the logic is fairly decent if it followed this path. As for the pick not being a lottery pick, do you think anyone is gonna give up an unprotected lottery pick if they don't know for sure that they're gonna make the playoffs?

Meh. I haven't been impressed with Fleury the 5-10 games I saw him, but I'll admit that is a limited sample size. Winnipeg will much sooner unload a contract like Perreault or Kulikov than give away Ehlers for peanuts. Sure, they're strapped with cap, but they have other options than to make a trade like this. And to answer your question: yes, I do. St. Louis gave up a 1st round pick for O'Reilly last year and while it turned out very well for them, I don't remember seeing them pegged as a favorite to win the cup anywhere.

Edit: nevermind, forgot that pick was protected. You may be right!

Fleury has played 87 NHL games, it's not that he's bad it's that the Carolina blue line is dumb stacked, and while Winnipeg would rather offload Perrault or Kulikov, they're gonna have to pay to move those contracts whereas they're getting great cap-controlled, future assets that frees up the cap now for Laine and Connor. The last team to move an unprotected first that wasn't at the deadline when the playoff picture was already set may have been Toronto for Kessel way back when, I'd have to go and double check.. Teams don't move unprotected, lottery firsts. Just in case something does go wrong and they end up winning the lottery

If this is the best deal Chevy could get for Ehlers I would hope he passes. I believe several other teams would offer more.
