VAN politely declines. They'll have cap issues of their own to deal with.

Pens want to move out cap they send 2 third line players to Detroit for a 2nd round pick and the need to pay Zetterberg on LTIR (costs Detroit less cash if they include Zetterbeg). Pens also need a RHD if they don't resign Schultz so they ask for Mike Green's expiring UFA rights in hopes to sign him to a deal with them before free agency on July 1st

I don't see how this makes any sense for DET.

Detroit get's Brian Rust (3rd line wing), Nick Bjugstad (3rd line C) and get rid of having to pay Zetterberg all for the price of a 2nd and a vet they wouldn't be re-signing anyways

Personally I think that is a really cool trade. It makes tons of sense! The Pittsburgh Penguins can probably sign Mike Green for >3 million dollars on a 2 year contract. He's such a fun defenceman.

So they add players that only serve to create a bigger logjam for a 2nd? Seems dumb for DET.

Also Zetterberg is only owed $1M and DET is not a budget team.

It doesn't make sense for Detroit. No way a team rebuilding gives up a 2nd rd pick for those guys. Detroit has guys who play a similar style. Rust and Bjugstad might be better than Helm and Abdelkader but Helm and Abdelkader have unmovable contracts so it makes no sense to finically to bring in more players to do the same job. Plus Detroit has a few important RFAs to sign before the 2020-21 season. I don't think Detroit resigns Green so he might be available but at the last couple of TDLs Green only gave 2 teams he would play for and they were Washington and TB. Detroit isn't going to be good this year and finding a 3rd line center isn't a big problem since they are still rebuilding. Take a look at Detroit's roster out of the 13 forwards they have only 4 don't have center listed as a position.
