Description
First of all, I highly doubt MTL finishes last or in a position where their odds of winning the draft lottery are high. But since this is ACGM, let's have fun and speculate that MTL miss the playoffs by whatever amount of points and miraculously win the draft lottery.

Welcome Alexis Lafreniere!

Secondly, I'm fairly confident that if MTL miss the playoffs... again... Marc Bergevin gets fired. He will not be given a 4th chance to fix his f**%-ups.

Thirdly, players I have placed in the LTIR section are not injured. They are the players that would be traded at the trade deadline if MTL have a crap 2019 season, or during the 2020 offseason if the Habs marginally miss the playoffs. I'm not doing "actual" trades for these players as they would only be for picks and prospects, use your imagination on what you think they'd get...

Fourthly, the trade I'm "actually" attempting on here is moving Drouin. The reason for this is if MTL have a crap season / miss the playoffs kind of year, Drouin would be 99% taking most of the blame for the teams shortcomings, since it would be his 3rd season with the team having not accomplished much, and unrealistic expectations given to him by both the fanbase AND the organization. There must always be "that guy" that people love to blame. Drouin is that guy for MTL. Because of another lackluster season, His value would be diminished to the point where almost all Habs fans would not be happy with what the return would be, but... you know...c'est la vie...

Fifthly (is that even a real word?), guys like Price, Weber, and Byron will not be traded for any kind of rebuild. They will be used as the veteran presence and help insulate a young team. Their contract will a secondary purpose to stay above the cap floor during the rebuilding years as well. Someone like Gallagher will also be included in this group, but would need a contract extension, if an agreement cannot be made, he will be put on the 2020-21 season trade block. Same for Danault.

I don’t think MB is getting fired. I think he had a good year as a GM last year, even though MTL missed the playoffs

I disagree. Bergevin said last season that the goal was to make the playoffs. They failed at that. The leeway given to him was due to the prospect pool he managed to build up in such a short time span which, granted, is pretty incredible considering 2 years ago everyone, including Habs fans, were saying MTL had one of the weakest prospect pools in the the NHL.

The goal this season is to make the playoffs again. He said it himself. Same as the owner. He won't really have the "hey look at the prospect pool I've built" card when it's already one of the top 5 prospect pools in the NHL. No playoffs again would mean no playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years. He won't survive that.

I did go a lot harsher than usual didn't I? lol

but if the Habs 2019 season does go up in flames (fingers crossed it doesn't), I don't think it's an unrealistic scenario.... and it still gives MTL Lafreniere (YAY!)

There actually no GM’s that openly said yeah this year goal is to miss playoff! We want to be so bad that nhl will give us the first pick by pity. The bergevin message was more we tried to make playoff but we pursue or plans
That is building the team with the draft. And he sure did a good job last two season with the draft. He had made some good trade sending weise and fleishman for
Danault and pacioretty for tatar and suzuki, galchenyuk vs domi. Brett kulak for
Two ahlers. The only thing that bergevin haven’t done great is the free agent signing. Signing alzner over markov was really bad but almost every team as a alzner in their team that why free agency is not the best option. But bergevin have done a
Great job last 2 offseason he add cap space and he is in great posture for the expansion draft. No problem with protection of players and will have money if team like tampa or rangers or Philadelphia who will have problem too keep protect all their players have to trade so good assets .

I don’t know why all that hate for him. For first time since the mid 90’s habs look in really good posture for futur year

Everyones who’s saying Bergevin isn’t a top5 Gm in this league are ****s. WE ARE REBUILDING and still trying to make the playoffs at the same time ! It’s almost impossible but he’s doing it. How are we supposed to be better than Tampa Toronto or Boston ? Stamkos-Point-Cirelli / Tavares-Matthews-(Kadri before) Kerfoot now / Bergeron-Krejic-Coyle(who ever will be C) / Danault-Domi-Kotkaniemi(19yo). Hedman / M. Reilly / Krug / Mete (just turned 21yo) I mean come on

Giving credit where credit is due, Bergervin has done a great job this past year and a half. But let’s not forget Bergevin has gone through a full “5 year plan” and nothing to show for it but telling the fan base “we are retooling”. So it’s definitely a stretch to give a “he’s a top 5 GM” label, when it took him 80% of Price’s prime years to figure his **** out.

But yes, to agree with you, we are in year 2 of Bergevin’s “let me fix what messed up” plan, and yes, it’s currently going well.

I agree with 90 % of what you're saying. The complain I hold against Bergevin is exactly what you mentionned in your first lines. ''A GM will not say openly that he will miss the playoffs !''

That's exactly the problem. Rangers have openly said they were rebuilding. Look at who they got :KAKKO. LOS ANGELES admitted they were rebuilding : they will get the top picks for a few years. If Montreal had the courage to really rebuild, they could have drafted one or two Dahlin, Rantanen, Marner, Heiskanen etc. over the last few years

One more reason for tanking : top UFA seem to always want to play for the same 4-5 teams and Montreal is not one of them. So how do you get the all-star players.

I wish the NHL would change the rules about draft selection because now the losers are the winners. Look at Toronto. Why are they contenders now ?

So until the rules change, the recipe is too contend 4-5 years, than loose 4-5 years. So let'S do it play Suzuki on power play, Poelhing on 2nd line with Drouin and Domi...ask Lekhonen to go all the way for offense (not defense), keep Mete on 1st, and think : dernière for Lafrenière

I question whether this is the right approach . Maybe we should not try to rebuild and make the playoffs at the same time...

You might finish last four year and a row and pick 4th in every draft so having One, two or
Three dahlin is really unrealistic. Plus rantanen was 10th overall, pastrnak 25th overall, Kuznetsov 25th overall so its more then just finishing last then making good selection. Buffalo pick up in the top ten last 7 year and they still are bad. Edmonton same
Thing. Montreal was in rebuilding mode and everyone knew it i just think that he never thought montreal would be that good last year. Trading Pacioretty for tatar and suzuki and galchenyuk for a year younger domi is rebuilding. Bringing armia, kulak, kk all that is rebuilt
