A Rantanen trade discussion starts with Kotkaniemi and one of Caufield or Poehling.

To take this serious I am interested to know which team would laugh first. Let's say they call at the exact same time. I think it's Colorado just because at least Calgary would hear "Drouin" and wait to hear the rest.
So my guess is Colorado laughs first, curses you, then apologizes after realizing you need help, then contacts the league office worrying about you as a fellow GM and friend

The discussion ends soon as COL mentions any one of those prospects.

They can laugh all they want. More than happy to keep all those assets. I sincerely cringe just giving up Primeau and Ylonen.

You mean the inevitable nightmare... when I'll have to dish out at least 11 mill to Tkachuk and 13 to Rantanen in 4 yrs when their contracts are up.

Rantanen is a 22-year old, 80+ point player. Kotkaniemi had a nice first season, but the jury is still out on just what his ceiling can be. Poeling/Caufield are top prospects. If you want a 22-year old Rantanen that has put up 80 points in both his age 21 and 22 seasons, it's going to be a hefty cost; like a young top-6 forward and a top prospect. Don't want to deal those pieces? That's fine, but Colorado's keeping Rantanen.

This is my biggest problem with prospects, people overvalue the one's on their team WAY too much. Caulfield and Poehling are probably in the top 30-40 range as far is NHL affiliated prospects go. Rantanen is a top 10 winger in the entire NHL. It's very unlikely that Kotkaniemi, Caulfield or Poehling start their careers even near how great Rantanen started his, and he's only 22, so he has almost 10 years left in his prime. Giving up 2 of those guys for a player of that caliber is absolutely what it will take to get him.

Look, I know we practically don't have any sample size from Poehling and Suzuki in the pros, apart from Poehling's hat trick in the only game he's ever played. But when I hear from scouts and insiders that Poehilng's game resembles O'Reilly's, Suzuki looks like a hybrid between Bergeron and Patty Kane, endless reports compare Kotkaniemi's game to Barkov's (when he was that age) and Caufield is considered as a rich man's Debrincat. Then I'm not giving anyone of them up. There's a reason MTL is ranked constantly the top 3 in league prospect rankings.

I wish I could keep Primeau considering they compare his style to Price's. But no one will touch Price with that cap hit and term, we're stuck with him till he's 38.

Ylonen is part of the Habs top tier prospect group. He was an integral part of Finland's gold medal at the junior championship. I'm stacked but I need to make room for these kids. That's why I need to give up some of my core vets.

COL doesn't have a top tier goalie prospect in the system, that's where Primeau comes in and Ylonen is an insurance in case Gally doesn't resign. COL is stacked with their own prospects too.

But anyway, I'm just throwing ideas out there just to get feedback. Like I said, I'll gladly keep my assets, maybe I'm blindly optimistic about their ceiling, but I'll take my chances.

It probably doesn't align with the direction of their team (They probably believe they can compete this or next year), so no, but that's the hypothetical value needed (plus picks) for COL to give him up.

If COL is willing to give up that stud for Poehling and Caufield and unproven future picks, then they're high on those prospects as much as me. Which the logical move would be for me to keep them.

"safe" doesn't really make sense here. As for the CGY trade, no thanks. Drouin is a 50-60 point player at best and Dannault is a 2/3C so bascially another Backlund. I would like Dannault but more around a Brodie trade not for Chucky lol.

Not if I'm open to give him a 13 mill× 7 offersheet and all they get is 4 1st rounders.

Screw that, Danault finished 7th in the selke voting, keep Brodie. Backlund would have to step down to 3rd C. That's nice C depth for a cup run.

7th sure, but with 4.68% of votes, Backlund finished 8th this year with 3.86% of votes. Hence the comparison, but you might say "oh well that means Danault is better" but Danault has never gotten votes for the Selke before. Backlund has gotten votes every year and was 4th in 16/17 with 18.5%.

Also I never said Danault for Brodie 1 for 1. Flames need secondary scoring, trading our 4th highest producing forward who happens to play on the 2nd line for lesser players makes no sense.
