Look at the day Kucherov signed. He had not produced like point had at that point. (no pun intended). He exploded after.

(EDITED: I was mistaken)

Also I pray he signs for that much. Then marner needs to sign for less

Marner will get a higher AAV than point no matter what, Tampa having the tax breaks should allow them to get Point under what Kuch makes

8x8.5, what was rumored. Tampa has no state tax and he loves tampa and probably wants to be able to keep the squad together

Lol this is not true. Kucherov signed the 9.5M x 8 deal after a 100 points season and after 2 season of being over point per game.

Also, that Killorn trade doesn't make sense. He's not a dead weight, he has value. Tampa won't have to add a sweetener in order to move him.

The state tax thing is significantly exaggerated in impact for three reasons

1) the state's governments still perform numerous public services. When they are not getting the money from state income taxes they get them from elsewhere (property tax, etc).

2) various jock taxes are still paid for all away games, so it is only home team games where the savings occur

3) if any of these players are not setting up complicated tax structures to shelter much of their incomes their nuts.

Special 4th) specifically comparing against Canadian teams. With the way the USD is, it is advantageous for Canadian players to earn in USD and spend in cad.

The tax benefit is maybe worth about 10-12%. That's would mean if 11 million is fair then maybe 9.8 million is fair after tax advantage.

In regards to comparing to marner, point is a C and a goal scorer. That should be worth more than the 10% difference in comparison. So point should make at least 10-12% more. If you want to say that's the tax difference then they should make about the same or point making more.

And before anyone brings up Kucherov, Tavares is like 4th in league wide goal scoring BEFORE he started with marner (over about a 6 year period). So he is playing with a superstar too

I apologize you are right. It was after a 100 point season. So point had similar (a little less points), but is a C, compared to a winger, and is also 2 years you get, Kucherov did it on his second contract

I hope you're right. None of the other RFAs should make more than him. If you want to argue that there is a tax advantage that is balanced out by him being a C and the best go scorer of them all

It's actually a lot bigger of a difference, look at the duchene contract for example, had he signed that in Montreal it would have been over 10mill AAV, but because of the tax breaks in nashville he got the same amount of money for only 8mil AAV.

Except it's not. Looking at total income tax rate is very misleading. And statements like that for MTL vs NSH is totally unverifiable.

Not true... sorry but there are many factors that pile on that eat into a player’s salary.

This is not about Duchene and the interview, but this article explains how things are blown out of proportion.
Taking the Stone contract with LV as example, the savings thanks to the no State Tax are around 71'000$ on a 9.5M contract. It's basically peanuts compared to the actual contract

Well, Marner can argue that he put up 36 points in 33 games playing on a line with Kadri.

I think it's super unfair to call them greedy ****s. They are earning that money for the organization. The athletes are the product. If it weren't for the salary cap which creates an artificial environment he could earn what he is worth.

If he earns less it doesn't make tickets cheaper. It leaves more money in the owners pockets

Yeah I might have been too critical. Fair game on willing to get paid all you can get, but fair game too on taking a bit less if you know your FO will use what you left on the table well
