If the Oilers trade McDavid it means they're gonna enter another rebuild, so they're probably gonna look to swipe up damn near all of the other teams top prospects. Probably gonna take KK, Suzuki, Caulfield/Poehling (maybe both) and a 1st or two on top of that. Think about it in terms of offer sheets, a 10m player warrants 4 1sts, and Mcdavid being the best player in the league would probably warrant 6-7 firsts, which is about the value for that package.

Any trade involving McDavid will most certainly result in Edmonton immediately becoming a contender and the receiving team giving up its core, top prospects, and likely at least a couple 1st round picks. They’d get the best player in the league, but would probably not improve their odds of winning the cup.

Money has to go the other way, too, or else the Canadiens (or any team for that matter) would not be able to afford the trade.
