I don’t like this trade for either team... but I like it a lot less for the Kings. Retaining 2m for 8 yrs????

Doughty showed some serious regression in his game last year. Leafs would lose that trade IMO. Fair trade would have to be for a younger D entering his prime (Dumba)

Leafs did something similar with kessel right? Doesn’t seem to be that big of an issue especially with cap going up

The kessel trade is the perfect example of why they should NOT eat that kind of salary long term. If Toronto had an extra 1.2mil of wiggle room, they'd probably have Marner signed by now.

A couple of months ago I made a Drew for Mitch ACGM. And got the same negative reaction that Drew is already in decline. Ironic though was if Drew hit the UFA, Dubas would have desired him as hard as he did J.T.

Or still have kessel and not kap or Anderson....that trade also helped them get Matthews..... it was a literal win win for both teams. And they would have money for marner if they didn’t overpay Matthews nylander and Tavares (he was a ufa so understandable)

Why is that? He is 2 years younger and signed for 2 less years. That 4 years at the end of a contract is rough...

1.2m x 7yrs sucks... 2m x 8yrs would be even worse. Especially to sign a kid that would want 12m+ on an 8 year deal. Essentially paying marner 14m+...

Let’s say marner signs for 10.5m. That’s not bad for a franchise player

I was simply saying that if the are dumping a massive amount of cap 2m isn’t that bad

In the long run it may be. But try convincing any kings fan that the last 3-4 years of that contract will look like crap.

Trading Kessel was the right move, but that was a pretty weak return for a player of his caliber. Ignoring the Freddy Andersen part, because it's a separate trade and it would have been done regardless of where they traded Phil, the Leafs got a a bottom pair LD who isn't even a Leaf anymore, an NHL wash out playing in Europe and A solid middle six winger. And they ate salary and gave up a 2nd. Not exactly a home run.

Which sucks. Huge mistake. We are lacking in 1.2 million in cap space for years. That sucks.

They used the 1st to get Anderson? Can’t really ignore that imo. Kap was the best prospect the penguins had at the time. Basically got 2 1st round picks and a average prospect. That’s a pretty large return for a guy that was basically run out of town

kessel trade helped and was worth retaining 1.2 million bc they got kap and Anderson....that trade also helped them get Matthews..... it was a literal win win for both teams. And they would have money for marner if they didn’t overpay Matthews nylander and Tavares (he was a ufa so understandable)

I’m honestly baffled that teams like the hawks and kings fans are trying to force a rebuild or complain about the contracts they currently have. They combined for 5 cups in 6 years. Any team would take that trade off. I mean what would you give up for a leafs cup?

Caps finally won a cup I’m good for a little while. I mean if they win again great but I’m not mad we signed Oshie or Wilson ect they made history in dc and I’m grateful that we have them

My bad on the age added an extra year. I am not worried about a 34 year old Tavares... 37 year old doughty, with the physical game he plays I have my doubts. Tavares will most likely decline in the last year of his contract... doughty will decline in the last 4 years of his contract.

You make it sound like they expire at identical ages.

The value was still crap on that trade.

Anyway in regards to retention the story at the time was if Kunitz waived and agreed to come there would be no retention. But he wouldn't and instead they traded Toronto spaling with a lower cap hit and Toronto had to retain to compensate.

Because a UFA doesn't have the acquisition cost of Mitch marner.

There is a difference between hating on and recognizing it's implications for trade value.

That running him our of town was the mistake.

Kessel was always hated for what he wasn't (an individual who can carry a franchise by himself), instead of loved for what he was (a top 15 scorer in the NHL).

He always need a Toews to his Kane in Toronto and didn't have it
