the Djoos is Ljoos

Created by: Eli
Team: 2019-20 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 2, 2019
Published: Sep. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reportedly the Devils might try to trade Zacha if he doesn't sign before Butcher and Mueller. They signed.

Devils fans are pencilling Butcher in to the top pair with Subban. Djoos got more even strength points per game than Butcher last year, got a +9 to Butcher's -17, came in second on the Caps in corsi the year before, and played all but the first game of their Cup run on a pair with Orpik, doing fine. If the Devils are trying to win right now, they try to get more mileage out of Greene and Severson. If they're trying to build a dynasty, they need to develop a genuine top pair defenseman at Subban's left, starting right away.

Washington throws in Stephenson who cut his teeth on their top PK unit last year, and should excel in Zacha's spot on the Devils' second PK group, to make the trade just about the difference in value between a potential top pair defenseman and a 3/4C with 2nd line potential.
Trades
NJD
  1. Djoos, Christian
  2. Stephenson, Chandler
Additional Details:
Guy who wins the top pair spot next to Subban when he outplays Butcher in camp, puts up thirty-five points this year, forty next year, and develops into a steady, smooth-skating top pair puck mover. Won't become Lidstrom. Absolute Ceiling looks like Stralman.

Guy who fills Zacha's likely 4C/PK2 spot in NJ almost as well, now that Hughes replaces Zacha on PP2. Not necessary for value, but the Caps don't want to waive him, and it seems like if you move Zacha, he'd have a spot in Jerz.
WSH
  1. Zacha, Pavel [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Guy who can hold out all year for all the Caps care, or whom they can sign down the stretch as an injury replacement, and hopefully develop into a middle six forward.

Doubt Simmonds is on 1st line. Gusev-Hughes will obviously be on 2nd line with Simmonds/Bratt/Palmieri. 3rd with Wood/Coleman-Zajac-Bratt/Simmonds.
Greene will probably stay in the lineup.

Thing is that assuming
Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Wilson
Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie
Hagelin-Eller-Panik
Zacha will be on the 4th with Leipsic, Dowd, Hathaway, Boyd.

Would WSH want to acquire him just to keep him in the bottom6/4th line. He won't progress.

Maybe if Kuzy gets suspended.

Posting as a Caps fan, obviously, I think they should do it, whether or not Kuznetsov wants any time off for personal issues.

They're about a million over the cap, as is. Trading Stephenson and Djoos for Zacha and signing Zacha for one year, 1M, gets them under, with a more even depth chart in terms of different needs.

Djoos played RD last year, and the RD rotation is now Carlson, Jensen, Gudas. Each averaged 19 minutes a night last year and scored 20 to 70 points. Djoos is ready to play top four somewhere, but Washington has five defensemen who already played top-four roles last year, plus Ovechkin playing left point on the power play. Siegenthaler is going to keep developing in the #6D spot available. Djoos is ready for a bigger job.

Zacha doesn't develop much in either spot, barring injury or time off, but Washington has more reason to imagine a center taking time off, and doesn't have a McLeod waiting in the AHL to step up if one does. In fact, I think they'd be just as happy making this trade for McLeod and a 2nd, but NJ probably prefers to move Zacha, based on some NJD blogger saying they might want to trade Zacha: https://pucksandpitchforks.com/2019/03/25/new-jersey-devils-pavel-zachas-contract-get-messy/

I think Hall is much more effective in a perimeter/playmaking role like he plays in NJ than as power forward, where Edmonton kept hurting him and then decided he was worthless. Put a tough guy in front of the net on that line to tap in twenty easy goals and save Bratt for depth playmaking. If Simmonds isn't tough enough, re-sign Boyle and just park him in the slot.

Greene is still a beast, and he absolutely carries the Devils' penalty kill on his shoulders, but he turns 37 this season. If management wants to sell Hall on a long term contract to be a part of a long-term contender, they need to give big minutes to young guys. Obviously Greene is still going to play, and can sub in for any defenseman in this line up, but until they can win games with guys likely to be around next year, they're not really proving anything to Hall. So rather than just copying every other NJD build, and putting the lines you're quoting, I put in some thought about how to make the team better.

I also think that even top picks develop better when they start in sheltered roles. Same with guys crossing continents. So I put Hughes and Gusev on line three imagining 70% offensive zone starts, with Coleman covering back for them, like a third defenseman.

Hagelin shows flashes of skill, still, but can be pretty streaky. I think for at least half the year, Zacha can earn that 3L spot, and if there's an injury he can play 3C. Can he do the same in NJ? Sure. But Djoos could crack the top defensive pair in NJ, and they can call up McLeod at 3C, so Djoos adds something valuable, and they don't miss Zacha once they plug in Stephenson on line 4.

So who adds what?
