No thanks. Any cap left for the Oil this season should go to forward depth. This just looks like a favour to help the leafs sign Marner.

We can sign regardless.. just a small move of lost cases for each other.

Ceci is lost case and needs some team without too much expectation to succeed and playing behind Larsson and Bouchard would help. Leafs cant yet relly on Liljegren for top-4 spot, so putting ceci in there would be not a good idea, but Benning is better and IDK how much edmonton wants him, but Ive seen a lot of ACGMs trading him and despite my dislike of him, Id give him a shot and its lesser risk than Ceci in there. It helps both teams. If Oilers can recoup Ceci, they have solid 3 right shot Dmen. If Liljegren is ready for top-4 minutes Id just keep Ceci on 3rd pair.. Benning was mishandled a lot too so thats why lost cases..

The Oilers need Benning this year to hold down a top-4 spot. From the verbal from coaches, Bouchard will start the year in the AHL, he certainly isn't ready for a top-4 spot yet. The Oilers have lots of candidates for 3RD (Jones, Bear, Persson, Bouchard), so Ceci is of no interest to them.

I don't see Benning as being a "lost case".

Not sure what others think of Benning here, but to me he is a cost effective #4-6 Dman, preferably on the bottom pair where his underlying numbers are quite positive. Benning has not been mishandled, he has been played 18-20 min when he’s hot, 12-15 mins when he is cold. Actually one of the smarter player usages on an Oilers team that is generally terrible at gauging that. Now, Benning could be traded for a cost effective middle six forward and I’d be content, but it makes pretty much no sense to trade him for a less responsible more expensive D. Any offensive upside from Ceci (likely minimal) would pale in comparison to defensive flaws and more than twice the cap hit. Ceci has been mishandled and has one year to make it up. Benning is what he is supposed to be.

Forward depth? Just curious, what would you give for Tomas Tatar? Or is he not a fit?

Say the habs wanted to clear cap space for an offer sheet.

He would be a nice fit, but at 5.3 mil the oil would need to move some cap out, which I’d be thinking the habs don’t want. However, if the Oil moved a little more cap out elsewhere (Gagner most likely), something like Benning, Puljujarvi, a 2nd and a 3rd would interest me as a starting point, if your main goal as a habs fan would be to dump some cap space in the process. However, I am guessing you might want more coming back than my proposal. The thing is for the Oil they probably don’t want to be trading any 1sts this year, although perhaps the 2021 1st rounder could be in play.

Perhaps Benning, Pulju and the 2021 1st for Tatar and a 3rd could work?

I would definitely consider that as a habs fan. I'm not that big on Puljujarvi for the habs though, but I think I deal could be made.

Vegas retained $500k on Tatar so his cap hit is only $4.8M.

Ah yes I forgot about that. Makes it more doable then, even if the Oil can’t move out a bunch more cap.
