Opening Night No Marner

Created by: Rooney

Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2019

Description
IF Marner is unsigned to start the season, I think they give Bracco a look. Once he returns, I think he'll be sent down unless he really impresses.

I think it will be Marincin and schmaltz on the bottom pair. Would be great if both sandin and Lilly were ready. The forward lines are okay. Would love to see Bracco with Tavares or Matthews but I doubt Babs does that.

As far as ltir. Clarkson and Horton will have to remain on IR with Hyman and Dermott on ltir and drop one healthy scratch. Every day that marner misses the daily cap hit of both clarkson and Horton will be gobbled up so he better sign quick because it’s coming out of his pocket.

I don't think TOR has the cap to go into the season without Marner signed.

"When a restricted free agent signs a contract after the NHL season has already begun, their cap hit for the first year is greater than the contracts annual average, and similarly the cap hit of the remaining years is less than that of the annual average."

The cap hit is then pro rated for time missed. The example I always use:

Marner signs a 10m contract 20% into the season. His cap hit is 12.5m and is then Pro rated (it’s actually just the accumulation of daily cap hit remaining) for time missed. 12.5m x .8 = 10m.

The leafs can sign Mitch Marner right up to dec 1.

The issue of ltir is another. I was actually just reading through the cba. By the looks of it they may actually be able to add Horton and clarkson to ltir the first day of the season. The leafs can max out the cap on opening night and add Dermott and Hyman to ltir. The ACSL will then be set and will not be recalculated. They can then add clarkson and Horton and the salary relief pool will raise by their cap hits.

Yeah that is what I am getting at. TOR doesn't have the room this year to have a 10M guy with a 12.5M cap hit this season like in your scenario.

I don’t Think you got what I tried to explain. A 12.5m aav signed 20% into the season only has a 10m accumulated cap hit.

Much like nylander. His cap hit in the first year was over 10m but it was pro rated down to 7m. This is how leafs were able to be at performance bonuses last season.

Yeah I get that cap is based on daily accrual but the calculation is also dependent on the salary structure of the contract. Dubas knows what he is doing but signing him into the season potentially presents another challenge that doesn't really need to exist.

the inflated cap hit is only on base salary. The leafs could also payout max signing bonus in year one and a base salary of 700k to avoid this. It would give marner his money for time missed but it may help the leafs out to just take the inflated cap hit this year and save money next season. Will be interesting to see how things play out if Mitch holds out.

Another thing to note is that Dubas gave nylander a 10m base salary in year one in order to get the desired result.

You are right that Dubas will handle it but would just seem unnecessary at this point imo. Just sign him before camp starts.

No way Sandin and Liljegren are NHL ready in October. Here's to hoping Marincin, Schmaltz, Harpur are NHL competent and no further Dmen injuries. Good news, Hyman is skating but looks like he won't be ready for contact when camp opens.

Hmmm... maybe my prediction of Hyman being ready for opening night may come true lol. Sounds like he may miss less than the required amount for ltir. I was just doing up an agm for the roster to set ACSL. May have to put Hyman on Ir for it. Any news on Dermott.

No word on Dermot. Here's a prediction. Leafs fans and Leafs haters will appreciating what Gardiner, Hainsey and Zaitsev did for the team in the past two season...they will be missed. Barrie and Ceci will do OK but missing that other Dman, two when Dermot is considered.

I'm optimistic about this D-core. I was always a big supporter of what Hainsey and Gardiner provided...but I think Barrie brings what Gardiner did + a bit extra + balance on the right side. Ceci we'll have to see. Hainsey brought a quiet stability. If they pair Ceci with Reilly and tell him to just focus on playing responsible D maybe he's able to provide some of the stability Hainsey did....but Rielly-Muzzin-Dermott (eventually) on the left and Barrie-Ceci-Schmaltz on the right + a handful of guys with NHL experience that can compete for 2-3 spots has the chance to be an upgrade on last year.

Looking forward to finding out once the puck finally drops

Hey, good to see you posting again. I think Ceci is the big unknown. I will say one thing though, I like his motivation. Contract season with basically his career on the line. He could be a 5m+ player next year or a 700k pressbox sitter. That’s a big swing.

Summer's get pretty busy for me with my son's sports/me coaching....that and the Marner situation has been frustrating so I intentionally avoided this forum for a while as there's only so much you can hash out between the first couple weeks of July and training camps.

Still frustrated with the Marner situation but I love when September hits, football is back, hockey is around the corner, weather is usually great and the kids' routine is a little more sane.

How'd the summer treat you and everyone here?

Yeah, great time to be a sport fan....baseball's finishing, NFL/hockey starting. Like you enjoy the weather but damn the sun is going down too soon..
You probably did the right thing avoiding the Marner's posts....I must have add 30 comments a day on the subject.
Here's the CapFriendly. Leafs fans on Marner...see the logic on in a variety of $$$$ and term for Marner from Leafs and Marner's POV. Leafs haters, Leafs MUST pay Marner Matthews money. Now if he was their own player,,,,and even a trade to acquire Marner then both parties agree to Aho or similar contract.
Summer was good for me....my first non cottage summer. . New CF members this summer. Once all the RFAs sign, there will no further discussion of CF till TDL.

Exactly. Let's see how the kid does. Worst case scenario we let him walk at the end of the year and don't have to worry about the long tail on what used to be Zaitsev's contract. Best case scenario...him and Barrie combine to give us a solid top 4 on the right side.
