Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2019
Published: Sep. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rumor is Marner 9.5x3 and Gardiner back to Toronto.

Only way they could sign Gardiner is if he signed 1x1 or 1x2(very unlikely) or maybe trade Kapanen and put Bracco in his place or trade Ceci.

I saw the rumor about marner getting 9.5 x 3 (which I think he ends up getting even though there’s a rumor that deal was on the table and shanahan shut it down).

Dubas made it seem highly unlikely the leafs would bring Jake back in his interview with Bob Mackenzie that got put out today. I think the leafs are set on the left side with Rielly, Muzzin and eventually Dermott. They have some stop gaps to fill the void while Travis is out...and they're probably hoping that Sandin will be ready for the 2020-21 which would alleviate the need to re-sign Muzzin...although I'm pretty excited to see how him and Barrie look together on a d-pairing.

Marner I can see getting done somewhere between $9.5 and $10m per. Not here to debate whether he's worth that or more...just that I think that's the range a 3yr deal would end up landing on.

I think everyone is on the same page that whatever Marner gets will be be more than his worth. I am really excited to see the Muzzin Barrie pairing as well and if possible I think the Leafs should try and resign both of them if they want to have a great blueline.

If Gardiner wants to take the largest hometown discount known to man, fine but I think he'd be an absolute fool for doing so. (Nothing to do with wanting the Leafs to suck - strictly as an observer)

For all our sake I hope you are wrong about marner. I’m all out of guesses though. That term to me screams arb in year four straight to ufa and off the leafs.

Nah, he just wants to play hockey. Papa wants to bankrupt the league.

I dunno. I don't interpret players wanting shorter term deals as them wanting to leave the team as soon as possible. The fluctuating cap has made long term contracts unpredictable. Agents of young superstars don't want their guys to be like a Mackinnon or even Crosby...guys who signed long term deals that, after 3 years, make it seem like they're vastly underpaid.

So agents are either pushing for long term deals on an AAV that is way beyond what anyone thinks is fair market value, or they want short term deals at an amount that ignores the traditional "2nd contract" and pays the guys performing in their prime right away. Teams are obviously trying to fight that trend...but with the way the game has changed, players are hitting their prime much earlier (and leaving their prime earlier too)...so makes sense for contracts to start reflecting that...young guys getting the big money and vets in their 30s battling for fringe money to keep playing.

I think it's more about maximizing dollars during the time period when the player's value is highest versus simply wanting the flexibility to leave the team asap.

If the leafs can afford to pay these guys fairly and ice a competitive team year after year, there's likely not a whole lot of incentive to want to leave.

I'd love to see an amendment to the CBA/Cap where there's some cap relief to teams when signing 2nd contracts Even something like only 75% of the AAV on 2nd contracts 5 years or longer in length counts against the cap...that way teams don't get penalized for drafting well and the players have an incentive to sign past their UFA years

I like the cap idea.

Marner will price himself off the team after going to arb in year 4. No doubt about that, he’s trying to do it now as an rfa. Just don’t think the leafs will get anything for him, Unless we trade him now. I’m not a big fan of that because I like his play. I think if he won’t do a 2 or 6+ year deal the smartest thing to do may be trade him. It sucks but it’s the Toronto maple leafs, not the Toronto Mitch Marners.
