Keller had a difficult sophomore season, but I'm fairly confident that he's going to be a stud. The contract is a slight overpay at worst and a big bargain at best.

Are you defending the Kevin Hayes contract tears of joy

HAHA! The Hayes contract is indefensible. I'm just making the point that UFA's have much, much more leverage than RFA's. I thought Hayes was worth about $5.75M on a long term deal...certainly not $7M!

I don't think boosting his production/82 by 15 points is a big ask given he will have more talent around him this year and most top offensive players break out between NHL GP #200 to 300. I used the Scheifele deal as a reference point for Keller, which now looks like an amazing deal as he jumped up to PPG levels in year 4. My expectation is that Chayka is betting on a similar year 4 jump from Keller, but I agree there is an element of risk in the "if".

I'm not even saying this is a bad deal. I love the idea of locking up RFA's early on long term contracts. But, I just think they paid about $1M AAV too much.

He wasn't UFA lol they traded for his rights and signed him before...

Probably a difference w/o a distinction.

That's a lot of money for a guy who has yet to score 40g in the NHL.

He may have been one of the few big RFAs remaining that a bridge would work for both sides, but this has to be a win for the player. Out of all the remaining RFAs that will sign for $6m AAV+ Keller probably has the most to prove.

Keller wasn’t an outstanding RFA. This deal is signed 1y ahead of when his ELC ends. Just clarifying that

Dude has not even cracked 50 points a season yet, this contract is not justified.

This is ARI trying to get ahead of the game. They believe Keller will be a 65-70pts+ player for them in the future, and if they were to wait till next year and Keller has a good upcoming season, they would be in the same position as every other RFA this offseason.

People saying that this will be a steal in a few years follow the flawed mentality that all players progress linearly and must improve from x age to x age, which makes even less sense when you consider that Keller regressed this season. At its best, this contract will be fair.

No one here is saying that or said anything remotely close to that. At best, the contract will be good, at worst the contract will be a bit of an overpay. Unless you know the future? (You don't.) He was already nearing a 70+ point season, and could easily exceed that this year.

This is exactly how MacKinnon's deal was signed. Guy took off after he signed not before

Bollocks. Sandra Bollocks.

Mack had 3 consecutive seasons at 0.75 ppg under the belt when he signed! Keller has only one, and it wasn't last year.

The real reason You want to get RFAs down is because you can make trades knowing where you are in the Cap having a big RFA I Signed basically freezes you from making any big free agent signings or Trades also in the next 9 years there is a good chance Keller hits 60+ points in almost every year and even some 70 point seasons as well

Here's the problem with 60 points almost every single season and maybe 70. That's not good enough next year....or the year after. Now if you're telling me that this is a double down so AZ can win 5 years from now??? Ok I'm listening, but holy cow that's a projection. So it's really a double down for the back end of this deal.

Look at it another way. We know Keller is a pure winger...AND...purely offensive. He's not getting any Selke awards any time soon. I will 110% agree that he contains elite talent. I hope we can both agree that he's kinda shown it 1 year. 60 points is good for 67th forward in the league in points...this contract would mean he's getting paid like the 13th best winger in the league. Yikes. He might indeed do it, but it's a freaking MOUNTAIN of a difference that needs to happen for Chayka to call this a sound move. Maybe he is indeed planning 5 years ahead?

Obviously the 'Yotes are seeing placing him with Kessel will have the same effect as Marner and J.T.

I'm shocked this wasn't the first comment when I looked here. The first thing I thought was wait, isn't that a bit high?
I had to go back and check his stats. I think his agent took AZ to the cleaner.

Especially considering the amount of money they already have committed to Dvorak, Schmaltz, and Chychrun. That's like $22M for 4 youngsters that have yet to prove their worth. Big risk, but clearly J.C.'s business model is: Buy low early. Except it's not low on Keller.

It’s deals like this that continue to remind how the Jets have a MASSIVE steal of a deal with Scheifele

And it's deals like this that now tell us just how screwed the Jets are w/ Laine and Connor. There are a lot of disappointed GM's today. And quite a few ecstatic RFA's.

This could end up being quite good in the latter half of the contract, but I think it's very risky. Very small sample size that's decent, but not great so far.

You'd think taking a step back in your sophomore season before becoming a RFA would reduce the amount you get...

Big gamble on Arizonas part, if he doesnt progress...this is an albatross of a deal. 14 goals warrants a $7mil plus longterm deal? Hinostroza got 19. Hell Vancouver let Granlund walk for nothing and he got 12! only to be signed for peanuts by Edmonton. Two years ago Granlund got 19 despite missing a dozen games, it looked like he had arrived and could be a 25+ goal scorer, not all players progress. Arizona is making some bold moves contract wise that could cripple them for years.
