I am not so sure it will have the impact people think. If I am a GM and I see that, my only thought is "well thats gutsy but it could pay off". The contract is kind of like a moonshot. If Keller becomes a point a game player who drives play and helps the team turn the corner then the deal is fantastic, but so far Keller has shown himself to be a good but not great player, how does he progress? Will the contract look good still? Really if he stagnates, the deal could be a disaster. Keller's deal doesn't really affect Marner, since Marner is a more proven commodity. If anything it helps Dubas out since its an 8 year deal. Ferris points to Keller in the negotiations at all, Dubas can say look at the term and dollar amounts. If you want over 9 million, its going to be a longer term. I'd wager Keller's contract shaves off some big dollars on a bridge deal.

I disagree. If Toronto still says they want bridge or long term and Marner still says 4-6 years at 10.5+ then the leafs are screwed. Marner can look at Keller and technically say I put up almost 200% of what Keller did now give me 5 years at 13 million or I won't sign. With the way he has been about things so far rejecting THREE fair deals, I think he will sit out.
There is actually some truth to that. Given that contract, Marner is worth at least $10.5M on a 8 year.
At least. See my last post about almost 200% more than Keller. I just don't see how Dubas can argue that. I have a feeling that GMs may not look at that contract but guys like Marner, Point, and Rantanen how put up almost twice as many points are Keller are gonna ask for at least 2.5 million more than what Keller actually got.

Let him then, it will serve no purpose to do so. He won't get more than the team can afford to give him and that's all that matters in the cap world. He can argue about term all he wants, if he wants 10+ it's going to be 6 years or more. If he wants 3 years it's going to have to be for much less.
That's what I'd wager the biggest impact will be. Him saying 10+ on less than 6 years is just silly after seeing Keller take an 8 year deal.

Marner has more leverage than most leafs fans think he has - The pressure is on Dubas, he does not want to let this drag on for much longer with this being an important season for the leafs (they need Marner in the lineup). Apparently there was a deal on the table (9.5 x 3) and Shanahan shut it down - IMO That is the deal Marner will end up getting and he'll be signed in the next week.

That's all wild speculation, I think Ferris is busy playing hollywood and Paul is being pretty silly as well but the actual negotiations are going very differently. I think the Keller deal is showing something, there is a battle waging among the players, super star young guys want all the money which is why they want shorter term with high cap hits but there are some other young players who are jumping in and grabbing their long term stability while they can and that could make these RFA's think differently, the more long term money is eaten up the less there is for themselves. It may force them to rethink the short term deal. The more 10+ million dollar players out there means less 5 million dollar deals, or 6 or 7 million dollar deals. If I can go out there and get myself a great payday now regardless of whether or not I think I can be worth more someday can be a good motivator for signing a long term deal before guys like Marner and the rest of the top dogs take too much money.
