Since we are doing the Marner Keller comparison

Created by: feds91stammer
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 4, 2019
Published: Sep. 4, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Keller first 2 seasons (age 19 and 20) - 164 games and 112 points.

Marner first 2 seasons (age 19 and 20) - 159 games and 130 points.

Keller: 0.68 points per game
Marner: 0.82 points per game

Marner produce approx. 20.5% more

Using that percentage Keller's 7.15m would be 8.615m for Marner.

Obviously this is a far from perfect calculation but it is interesting.

Edit: as pointed out by Bcarlo25 add in a tax adjustment. I would say 500k-1m and Marner is looking at $9.1-9.6M which seems very fair.

Indeed it is.
I wouldn't be shocked however if marner gets more than 9 million per year though

Goes without saying, but on much worse teams. Interesting indeed.

better comparision:

K is the 11th letter in the alphabet. M is the 13th letter in the alphabet. Numerically, M is 11.1% greater than K.

Therefore, Marner should sign 7.94 M * 7.

then tack on a million because marner actually is in RFA, and has a 3rd season where he proved it big time. then take off three years because the leafs GM hands out that kind of term like candy apparently.

Nothing against Stepan or Galchenyuk, but imagine if Keller played with finishers like Tavares and Matthews. If Arizona adds more finishers like Kessel then that deal will be a steal.

Matthews is the best player to ever play hockey. 9/10 people would pick him over Mc David !!!!! Matthews is a god.

I agree.

"Hands out that kind of term like candy" literally after just one time. Also the tax implication is completely nullified by TO's ability to pay upfront. Which contrary to popular belief is at the very least, as big of a benefit as tax free states.

TOR isn't the only team paying high percentages of contracts in bonuses.

we've gone back and forth on this. I rarely respond to you because you are flat out bonkers.

taxes aren't nullified by anything. There's a salary cap. everyone pays big money. everyone gives bonuses up front. everyone gives no trade clauses. everyone makes deals lockout protected. every market has bonuses available to their players.

This is true, but where TO is different is they can afford to do this with everyone. Johnsson and Kapanen both are getting a lot of bonus money. Apparently other GM's are getting annoyed with this because smaller market teams can't afford to do this. Some small market teams can't do this with their stars let a lone depth players.
