Laine Trade

Created by: Hockeygoalie53
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 5, 2019
Published: Sep. 5, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With rumors out there that WPG is talking to eastern conference teams about Laine AND rumors that the Isles are interested, figured I'd give a shot at putting together a Laine trade.

Also, Brassard is in the AHL because he goes the way of Kovar and struggles in camp and is released with Beau taking over the 3C spot with dal Colle and Ho-Sang on his wings.

Admittedly it will be tough next year to sign Barzal, Pulock and Toews without moving out some money (Boychuk/Ladd/Komarov).

This is based on Barzal getting 8x10, Pulock getting 8x6 and Toews getting 6x4, Martin being brought back at 1.5m and either Soderstrom or Sorokin taking over the backup role from Greiss.

Change Wahlstrom to Bellows and they can send us Kulikov.

Took me longer than it should have...

It's definitely a rich trade. And probably gets it done. But compared to that deal, IMO it's almost better to try and sign to a $10.5x5 and make it a really tough decision for WPG. Compensation is only 2 1st's, 1 2nd and a 3rd.

I understand what you're saying regarding the OS, but having Laine signed at 8m AAV (which I'm not even sure is possible) already creates enough headaches next year when Barzal, Pulock and Toews all need new deals. Signing him to an OS for over 10m AAV makes it all that much harder. I could see removing the 2nd round pick or maybe making it lower with a condition (say a 4th with a condition that if Laine scores 50 goals it becomes a 3rd?).

But realistically speaking, none of the players traded hurts the Isles. Wilde would be stuck behind Pulock, Mayfield and Dobson, Leddy has already been replaced by Toews, Wahlstrom is the only one, but essentially he could become close to what Laine is now so I see that as a wash. Plus with Laine and Eberle signed, plus Ho-Sang (if he puts his crap together) and Holmstrom in the minors the right side is pretty solid moving forward.

I'd have to think if the Isles aren't including Pulock or Dobson (which they shouldn't on either one) than Wahlstrom would have to be a must. That being said, I would much rather move Wahlstrom than either of those D.

That's a yes and a hell of a haul for winterpeg ... Only problem is the salary is a dream for the isles ...probably gonna take at least 9 x 5 ... Would make the isles scary to play against cause this trade really doesn't hurt the roster ...nicely done

That may be so, but I think this is the kind of package it's going to take to get WPG to make the trade without the Isles having to include Dobson or Pulock. I could see swapping out Wilde for Mayfield OR Wahlstrom for JHS/Bellows and maybe dropping the 2nd rounder... maybe something like

Leddy, Mayfield, Wahlstrom and 2020 1st for Laine?

OR

Leddy, Wilde, JHS or Bellows and a 2020 1st for Laine?
