Suppose the Oilers Think They Cant Sign Nurse

Created by: OldNYIfan

Description
95-degree days in September cause odd thoughts.

Not sure whether Bear or Jones would make the team as 7th defenseman.

My thinking on the trade is that Bjorkqvist and the third are the compensation for taking on Johnson's contract. Then Nurse = Hallander and the first. (Pittsburgh wouldn't do the trade and leave themselves without a first or second in 2020, hence the second-round pick swap.)

Can't sign? Offer sheet coming? Playing in Europe? Same options as the other 23 unsigned RFAs this season.

The Oilers are probably better off flipping him - if they do - for a skilled winger in the Ehlers / Drouin range. Not sure about the price either: Hamilton was flipped in a similar scenario for consecutive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Round Picks: that suggests the price of taking on Johnson is two good prospects and giving up a second? I'd rather let the Pens keep Bjorkvist so the Oilers could keep their 2nd Round Pick.

If the idea was to blow the team load up on prospects, this kind of move should have been made at the draft and should have involved a similar trade with RNH and Larsson.

I was just thinking out loud, wondering what the Oilers would do if . . .

I have no info or even rumor one way or the other.

My strategic idea about the Oilers is that they aren't going to improve by making one-to-one trades unless those exchanges are really uneven. For example, I think Montreal becomes a playoff team and could go deep if they added Nurse; but Edmonton needs more than exchanging Nurse for Drouin or Tatar to become a contender. So I'm trying to create trades where the Oilers have a chance to get two good future players for one really good current player. Perhaps I tried too hard to accommodate Pittsburgh's need to dispose of Johnson at the same time.
