It's pretty impossible to know this.....if he's a good fit then it's very realistic that he could be resigned as the Oilers have quite a bit of money available next year.

If it doesn't work, the Oilers could easily move him at the deadline and recoup that 2nd round pick (albeit lower) from a contending team.

The Oilers should worry less about rookies coming into the NHL and filling roster spots and worry more about adding bonafide NHL defenceman to a roster who's defence ranked 5th worst in the NHL last season.

But maybe they haven't learned anything over the past 13 years?

Not sure if I agree. One year left then UFA. What should they expect to get for him? As much as Puljujarvi has been diminishing his value lately, there’s still a good player there. Plus a 2nd rounder is good value and is good extra currency for maybe a potential deadline deal

100%. As much as it would look like they’re trading JP for a one year rental, they should be focusing on making the playoffs and competing instead of holdoing out for a prospect that might play in 2-3 years.

I agree with your thinking, but "lately" Puljujarvi's value has started to climb again. The reason for his poor performance last year was because of his hip issues which made it painful to skate and hindered his mobility. The team pulled the plug on his season early and proceeded with surgery, after which Jesse demanded a trade. I would argue that his value was lowest at that point, as no GM knew just how long recovery would be or if he would ever skate 100% again. The odds were very good for complete recovery, but you just never know, right?

Well, now we do. Jesse has been playing in the Champions Hockey League with his Liiga team and has been skating just fine. NHL scouts are there watching, so I'd argue that Jesse's value is recovering every day. He has scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 games, and is +4. If he dominates Liiga I the same way his value will go WAY up, making this trade a loss for the Oilers. If I was Holland, I think I'd wait a bit before moving Puljujarvi.
