Description

If I had to choose one player to keep on this team between Mitch Marner and Jake Gardiner, I’m taking the defenseman and it’s not even remotely close. Jake is by far the best defenseman on the Maple Leafs, he is superior than both Rielly and Barrie by a landslide. Just look at their advanced stats, possession numbers, amount of zone entries and shot suppressing amount. He’s single handedly carries this dreadful blueline for so many seasons. There’s no one more complete than him on this team in that position and I am so angry that they let him walk for exactly the same cap as last season, just so they can sign Mitch Marner, who is not even worth 6 million dollars on an 8 year deal but overvalues himself at twice his worth! Disgusting.

Sorry, what? Gardiner is good but nowhere near as good as Marner IMO. I wouldn't say he's as good a d-man as Rielly ... Rielly is a top 20 d-man in the league IMO ... Gardiner is a 2nd pairing d-man IMO.

Yes, every player in the NHL is overpaid, but by NHL contract value, how is Mitch Marner not worth 6M?????? He just got 94 points.

Gardiner does have some decent numbers, but Leafs fans have literally been discussing this cap crunch all summer, and nobody mentioned the possibility that he was more valuable than Marner, yet.

Even if he's better this year, at 29, he's not likely to improve anymore. At 22, Marner might keep getting better, which should, as tough as this might be to imagine, make him more valuable than Jake Gardiner.

Marner just signed a 11.5 m ish contract mid season like Matthews and Matthews was holding out right nOw the leaf fans would be roasting him or would they be more understanding? Jw bc marner is about equal to Matthews and obviously isn’t worth 2.5 million less than him in any world.

The amount of disrespect I see on her for him is crazy. He is slightly less productive than Matthews year 1-3 and was more productive year 3. People praise Matthews like some sort of Mc Jesus but want to view marner like some sort of nylander..... dude broke 90 points name a guy on the current roster to ever do that ?

Personally I think Marner is a TOP15 winger of the league. Does he deserve Matthews money? Probably not, but I don't see $10M being too much at all, regardless the term of the deal.

Personally I have no issues with the Matthews deal, his abilities are good enough to make him TOP10, possibly even TOP5 C in the league. I think his contract is fair enough.

Stamkos' deal is too cheap if you ask me, but they had a great GM back then.
