I think that they have value for these lower-expectation teams. Think of it this way:
Grading for a class is based on the average. Those with the higher grade vs. the average get the highest grade, whereas those with the average grade score lower. If marking is based on averages, people are more motivated to surpass average. Likewise adding competition doesn't make it a lock for certain players to make the team.

There is already plenty of competition on D, After our top 3, we have Guhle, Larsson, Mahura, Hakanpaa, Holzer, and Del Zotto. That's 6 Defenders vying for the last 3 spots. May the best man win
