Where's Forsberg expected to play? Starrett and Skinner are already penciled the AHL time and it's likely that Wells is going to have to be loaned to another AHL team to get minutes.

Edmonton could get a lot more for Benning than another overpaid 4th line forward.

Forsberg will play Nhl as Koskinen`s backup. Don't expect Smith staying healthy and in top form. Starrett and Skinner are not ready yet. Edmonton will make use of 3 goalies the coming season - that's how I see the situation.

If you don't like Shore, how about a third-rounder?

If (read: when) Smith goes down to injury, Frosberg's the backup. Fine. What about when Smith isn't hurt? Koskinen and Smith have contracts that must be honoured at the NHL level, then we're back to the same question I've posed.

I recall a time where Edmonton ran a trio of Khabibulin, Dubnyk, and Deslauriers one season due to neither young goaltender being waivers exempt at the time but both having a degree of potential. That experiment failed miserably: there isn't enough icetime between scratches for the third guy to justify having a goaltender park his ass in the booth for the dozen or so times that he's needed. It makes a lot more sense for Starrett's development to see the odd game if one of Koskinen or Smith get hurt. The "starter" at that point ends up with an increased workload unless Shane proves ready. Carrying a third goaltender - until there's a legitimate scientific merger between goaltender usage, practice and quality of icetime, and load management - doesn't benefit teams terribly often.

Give it a few years until the sports science behind it (even better conditioning, goaltender-specific physiologic analytics, etc) catches up, and I don't doubt the possibility of teams consistently running three goaltenders a season.

There's a market for players like Benning and I think more than a 3rd Round Pick could be had. Hoping his numbers get a bit juiced alongside Klefbom with more minutes and he can be flipped for a 2nd Round Pick plus.
