The first RFA defenseman domino falls. McAvoy, Provorov, Carlo, DeAngelo, and Pettersson remain.

I figured they would have locked him up long term now while they have the cap space, but maybe it was the player who pushed for the shorter term. Now Jones and Werenski's contracts are up at the same time, so that will be an expensive off season for the Jackets. However, they have quite the top pairing for the next three years for less than the price of Doughty & Karlsson individually.

Having Jones and Werenski at a combined $10.4 million for the next three seasons is pretty impressive.

Werensky gets 3 x 5
Marner gets 3 x 10

I rather have 2 werensky’s over 1 marner

Really glad he didn't get overpaid on a long term deal. Sens will be looking at guys like Werenski and McAvoy for Chabot's deal.

So Columbus finally gave in to what he wanted. Honestly, this is a fantastic deal. Short term yes, but a top-2 defenceman for 5 mil. YES PLEASE.

Its not great for longterm for the team. Its great for short term but will they be able to capitalize off the savings? or did they just outprice themselves on a young top pairing dman when he is slated to get paid again in 3 years.

With Werenski at 3x5m what do the other RFA D-men come in at? Assuming 3 year deals I think: McAvoy $6.25, Carlo $3.5, Provorov $3.75, Pettersson $3.75, DeAngelo $6.5 <- (that one will probably cause controversy)

I love how the rfa market is becoming so inflated that when a guy signed one of the most pricey bridge deals I can remember it's seen as a huge win.

I think this will do the jackets well short term but man would I have been pushing to go long if I were them...

And that 3rd year has a 7 mil salary... I voted that it was a good deal but now that the numbers are coming in this is not a very good deal for the jackets. Great deal for Zack though.

It’s good value, I guess, and I can’t justify saying “no” outright, but this isn’t amazing for CBJ, either. If they plan to contend in a while and may have cap issues, a long-term deal would have made a huge difference, as the cap hit would be lower that way than what it will be now, and they’re not a team that can sacrifice their future for right now.

I’m guessing this is what Werenski wanted and ultimately you can’t go wrong with a $5m AAV for players of that caliber, but it could definitely have been better for CBJ.

what are you talking about. He comes out of this a RFA. They still have control. It's a great deal for CBJ. Zack's salary probably took a hit due to inconsistent play, but he's still a damn good young defense man.

Warenski's contract is designed where he can just accept his QA for 7 million dollars and bridge himself to UFA (or go to ARB if he prefers but that isn't guaranteed).
He is paid one of the most expensive bridge deals ever.
His totals have been from sheltered minutes.
It is not a very good deal.
