Considering they have Couturier, Patrick, Frost, Vorobyov, Rubtsov, O'Brien, Laughton at centre, they could've have waited one more year before starting to compete. Giroux can also playe centre if they needed that.

He might be overpaid but its really not that bad. Probably would have gotten 6.5 for 7 if he hit free agency. He's a good 2C and if Patrick takes the steps to be a 2C within the next 2 years Hayes is a very good 3C. Makes the team a lot deeper at center than it was last year.

Giroux has been most productive when he's played wing, He has also said he doesn't feel like a center anymore he'll still take draws but it's much less responsibility.

You guys have so many promising players that are on the rise. I thought Patrick was the next 2c? Trust me as a WPG fan, I know how much it hurts to have a 3c making 5m+

If I was PHI I wouldnt have signed Hayes, like csick said, if you needed a 2c, Giroux could have stepped in. To me this move for them just pushes Patrick down the lineup unless they decide to play in on the wing.

Even if Giroux can't play 2c anymore, I would way rather have let Patrick try to take that spot and not spend 7m a year on a guy that'll most likely be your 3c.

Patrick has struggled in the 2C role that's one of the biggest reasons for signing Hayes. Giroux has been more productive on the wing and will still take draws but the defensive responsibility of playing red line to red line was getting too much. Giroux said it himself he'd prefer to play on the wing.

I doubt anyone else would have offered him 7 years. 4-5 is more likely, at $5.5 - 5.8M.

Just doesn’t make sense to offer him 7 years when you know you have players coming up that’ll push him down the lineup. Patrick plays 3c this year and next year he’ll be ready for 2c and then what? Hayes is your 3c and he’s making 7m and that’s a big problem.

Werenski is not the #1 D in Columbus, Provorov is the #1 D in the Flyers.

Provorov should get more.

They're going to get very similar deals and with the salary in year 3 being 7 I think it is possible the same deal is signed.

No chance Provorov signs that deal when a 3 C in Philly gets 7.5

Except he was signed to 7.1 to play 2C like he did in Winnipeg and for NYR last season... Also Provorov isn't a UFA

But he's a 3 C, you could sign a Brassard to an absurd contract and then say he's your "#1" C but that don't make him a #1 C

Hayes has been around 45-50 points his entire career which is normally what you ask from a 2C. He should be playing with to quality line mates so maybe he'll be more productive. The difference between Brassard and Hayes is that Brassard is bad.

So I've looked it up, and Brassard and Hayes have had pretty much the same career (Brassard just older) and Hayes is the next Brassard

It's interesting that looking at that lineup that it is Hayes that pops out as being the problem contract. If he plays to his capability he'll be very important to the top 3 center group. He's young enough that 7 years is not that bad. When I look at that roster JVR's contract looks the most painful. He's already shoved down to the 3rd line (a good problem to have) but he's also next in line for rookies to take his job with Frost and Farabee coming.
