The leafs would trade him/sit him before that happens. Fridge literally said that offer by the Mitch camp is off the table.

Lol. You actually think the leafs would suck without marner?!?
Bruh this team was top 5 of the league without Matthews AND nylander last year. Marner (a worse and more replaceable player than mats) is not the key to the leafs success.

Also, I doubt he'd be laughing leaving millions on the table and I'm sure his endorsement deals would dry up if he isn't playing.

My thoughts exactly. He has no leverage here.

You're right it's bye Mitch. But only for a year in Europe. Then the negotiations start again next summer. Of course the usual Leaf haters think Marner is traded and then he suddenly signs a contract with his new team which is no higher than what the Leafs are offering. No one truly believes Mitch gets 10 X 3 and 12m QO from another team, it's just troll talk.

Isn't the fact that a 3 year bridge is the most likely option a little worrying for the Leafs? That would mean Marner and Rielly's contracts would be up at the same time. We already have an idea of the next Marner contract (12 mil at least) and even though I don't think Rielly creates as much drama, he's still gonna be paid like a top 2 defensman (10 mil + at that point)

I don't understand how people come to the conclusion that the Leafs will be terrible without Marner. As you mentioned....missing Matthews and Nylander in different parts of seasons...that does more damage than missing Marner.

As if not having Marner in the lineup means no Tavares either. Such short-sighted way of thinking.

I don't think it makes any difference when the players contracts are up. If the contracts are too much, Leaf will just move on to the spend their money elsewhere. And Marner, of Marner wants to be a UFA as soon as possible doesn't really matter what the Leafs offer him. Leafs can just QO him at 8m or whatever and have for that final season before he is an UFA

I highly doubt given what Marner's camp's price is right now that they would accept an 8 mil QO. If Meier got a 10m QO for his last year, and Werenski 7 mil, they would easily go for 11-12.

But the Leaf can offer 8m X 3. which is more that fair. Leaf don't have to give 6m, 6m 12m and get in QO mess. That's the Leafs leverage, The QO has to match the last year of contract. Sure the Leafs can do 12m but they certainly don't have to. If Marner wants to miss a year because his QO is 8m not 12m....so be it. Who is offering him 8m to play in 2019/20 on a short term deal?

They don't have to give him a bigger QO, but it's extremely optimistic to think that if Marner's asking price is 11+ mil right now, they're gonna settle for 8 mil 3 years later. QO is extremely important to these guys because it gives a definitive baseline for the salary of their next contract, and judging by the numbers thrown out at this point, Marner's gonna want a huge payday when that time comes. They're 100% gonna be pushing for a 12+ QO so he gets that contract.

You know this it's virtually meaningless what Marner's asking price is. Leafs competition for his service are offers from other NHL teams. Marner has had two months to sign with another team and hasn't yet, so I'm kinda doubting that the Leafs offers are much different than what other teams are offering Of course Marner can refuse to play in the NHL this season and get 2m elsewhere if he wants.
Why is so important getting QO offer? Does he have doubts he is entitled to such a contact? Sure it's a four million difference between 8m and 12m on a QO but if the Leafs don't want to do it, the only viable option Marner has is not to play in the NHL this season. or get an team to be in an offer sheet with that 12 QO four years from now ...yea then the Leaf will match.
Of course Marner wants a huge payday. Aho got 8.5m for 5years. Is Marner entitled to that much more that that? Sure Matthews got overpaid but so what, it really doesn't affects Marner's leverage that much.

They were arguably better without matthews and nylander last year than with them. Their center depth is 10x better than their wing depth. 100% will nylander have a better season this year than last. BUT without marner (no trading for a winger) what are your projected lines? your first line is significantly weaker with kapanen instead of marner. That line will be fine but its not the same. then you have nylander and matthews which should produce if matthews stays healthy. your 3rd line now blows and i dont really think you have a great fourth line to begin with. Dont forget, hymans injured theres no way he starts the year after a torn acl in april. Mikheyev is a huge question mark you have no idea what kind of production you are going to get from him. and you have a new 3rd line center in kerfoot, who people keep telling me is more of a lw than a center. without marner these lines are a mess. Could they get it done? sure. will they be the 3rd team in the east? no. Dont forget. bruins also missed key players last year with bergeron, chara, mcavoy, and pastrnak all missing significant amounts of time and they still were 3 and a half games ahead at the end of it. The division didnt get any easier either with florida getting an actual goalie. we still have a long way to go but lets not act like you are rolling the same team out here. lets not act like it wont have an impact. if nylander starts the season last year do you think they win 4 more games? that was the difference between home for the first round and away for the first round. I never said they would suck. Never said that in the slightest. Just dont think they will be right up with boston/tampa/florida. you will probably be right in with where montreal was last year.

nice retort. glad you contributed to the conversation. How am i clueless? matthews missed 10-16 thru 11-27 nylander started his first game dec 6 so he misses all of october and november. in those months toronto was a combined 18-8. (69.2 winning percentage) rest of year: 28-20-8 (50% winning percentage) Of those first 8 losses, 7 came when matthews wasnt there. all 7 were to playoff teams. how many of those losses are still losses if matthews is there? who knows. if nylander doesnt sit out do you think they can win idk 4 of those games? or 4 of the ones they lost in december when they forced him back into the lineup when he clearly wasnt ready? Yeah they probably do. They probably get home ice and beat the bruins. Marner is better than nylander so what makes you think with a weaker all around team (yes it is) that losing their highest point producer wont significantly impact this team?
