Stecher and Sutter to Anaheim

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 8, 2019
Published: Sep. 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just scoping out what would be the ramifications of AlwaysNext Year's proposed trade with Vancouver to alleviate the Canucks' cap/roster problems this year.

RFA signings are a little high in each case to see how much room is available for Demelo. Obviously, sending Morand instead of Shore would obviate signing one or the other (Shore or Demelo).

I'm alright with this as a Canucks fan. I'd prefer it be a 2021 3rd though.

That would be fine with me.

By the way, it may be unclear from my Team Explanation that although this is a projection of the 2020-2021 roster, the trade suggested occurs before the start of the season THIS year (to allow Vancouver enough cap space to re-sign Brock Boeser).

Van can sign Boeser without this deal. plus at this point we may as well keep stetcher and tough out the last year of sutters contract, or just buy him out next summer

Yes, that's true (see @GMBB 's https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1419855), but assuming that Gaudette and Motte make the team this year and Zack MacEwen comes in at RW, Morand is immediately your best center prospect other than the unsigned Tyler Madden. Or, if you take Shore, he's an upgrade over Sutter right now and off the books after one season.

but we would lose stetcher who is arguably more valuable than all of them

Yes, that argument can be made (that's why we're interested in him), but right now he's playing on the third pairing. He's excellent insurance against Edler getting injured (or Tanev getting injured again), and in two years I can see him taking Edler's place, but right now he might be considered surplus to need.

Upon mature reflection, if the Anaheim player is Shore, I think that the third-rounder should come out. If the Anaheim player is Morand, I think the 2021 third (see @Wqrrior 's comment above, so that Vancouver doesn't have just a second and fourth this June) should be balanced by a 2021 fourth from the Ducks.

I also don't think Stetcher is that good. A #5 defenseman who is decent as a #2 PP D as well. I'd value him as a 2nd at most.

I don't think it's worth it for Anaheim with all the cap they're taking.

I do not think this trade is necessary. The Canucks do not need to offload a good contract in Stecher just to offload Sutter. Worst case scenario they bury him in the minors after Roussel comes back.
