Marner doesn't have as much value as you would think due to his ridiculous contract demands. He reportedly just turned down a 7 x $11M offer. Nobody is going to give you their prime assets for the opportunity to pay Marner $12M x 5.

On one side I agree, but on the other.. there are desperate GMs wanting to pay for "star power and brand".. and I think there would be a pretty good amount of them in NHL. Dont give NHL executives too much credit in this one lol

He is really good offensively and can put up good minutes, is good transitional Dman. I think its massive upgrade on what we had.

There's also the whole "expiring contract and didn't fit into the Avs long-term plan" part that the OP is completely ignoring. Manson isn't someone the Ducks will lose next year for nothing if they don't move him.

I completely disagree. Barrie fits in perfectly with what the Leafs needed. He's a great skater, really good offensively and will greatly help our second PP unit.

It wasn't about losing him next year for nothing in this trade. With the whole Faulk for Kase rumor going on I feel this deal could work.

Faulk will walk into Manson spot and Marner will replace the offense that Kase and Radkell produced combine. It brings them a high profile 22 year old superstar. They have the cap to meet his ridiculous demands and Daddy Marleau is only 2 hours away if he doesn't sign with Anaheim.

Or Faulk could walk into the other top 4 RHD spot to give the Ducks 2? They don't have anyone else worthy of a top 4 spot on the right side.

It would appear that no team would give Marner a contract that is much different than the Leafs are willing to pay. Marner just might have priced himself out of the NHL this season.
The trade 6 total years of Rakell and Manson at 7.9m. Marner let's say 10.5 X 6. Still I don't know if Ducks do that deal either

To add, the Leafs need him this year. And without Marner, Barrie would be on the # 1 PP.

not even roasting but lets be honest why is anaheim trading young talent right now? subtracting 2 young cost controlled pieces for one young guy without a contract doesnt really benefit them.

Barrie was set to be a UFA so his value was way lower then what people think it should've been, same goes for Faulk, without an extension he isn't worth much.

Lots of guys here over rate kerfoot Bc he had nice shot metrics ( which is funny bc they don’t line up with how he plays) and over look kadri as a legit 2c

Kerfoot = Rosen and the 3rd
Barrie 1 year = kadri 3 years

No one stole this trade, it’s pretty balanced imo

How many of them have $12M in cap space though?

If trade happens you are looking at the team with probably around 5-6M in cap space because some cap would go back to Leafs, maybe even more than 6M depending on package for Marner..

But, how many teams can do that? Lets take a look at all the teams with $5M+ in cap space today:

New Jersey: $6,461,667 - possible candidate, but next year could be a problem if they're trying to retain Hall
Los Angeles: $6,740,606 - not sure they have the assets to get it done, all their good guys are aging and likely not of much interest to Dubas
Boston: $7,294,167 - it only appears they have the space because the haven't re-signed McAvoy and Carlo yet
Calgary: $7,756,625 - no cap space here either, they still need to sign Tkachuk and Mangiapane
Minnesota: $7,958,911 - possible candidate, I doubt they'd part with Dumba though and there's not much else of interest there
Tampa Bay: $8,476,669 - still need to sign Point
Anaheim: $8,500,242 - possible candidate, if Kase for Faulk happens they have about $6M in cap space. Next year could be a problem depending on the size of Faulk's extension
Columbus: $10,765,918 - possible candidate, Anderson + Jenner + Bemstrom? Jones and Werenski are off-limits I think
Ottawa: $10,890,001 - I doubt Toronto would trade Marner within the division and I doubt Ottawa can afford him anyhow.
Philadelphia: $13,417,421 - still need to sign Provorov and Konecny, won't have $5M+ when that's done
Winnipeg: $15,450,836 - still need to sign Laine and Connor
Colorado: $15,615,239 - still need to sign Rantanen, may be a candidate even after that though, and they certainly have the assets to make it happen. Trouble is, they won't pay Marner more than about $9.5M on a long term deal, doesn't look like he'll go for that

Of the 12 teams that appear to have enough cap space, only about 3 are realistic candidates for a Marner trade.

My concerns have nothing to do with Barrie's offensive ability or his puck moving skills. It has more to do with his play in his own end when the other team has the puck...the Sportsnet and TSN hockey people described Barrie as Gardiner-lite in his own end.

That...if you haven't paid attention...is not a ringing endorsement.

Is Jake Gardiner better than Barrie? If you say yes or equal than the Leafs are in the same boat as last year.
