I mean this was completely obvious, but hab fans thought otherwise

Habs fans have had quite the summer, unfortunately.
I think every Habs fan kind of knew it wouldn't work. Its just what MB used as his explanation during his presser might have misguided those who didn't know any better and frankly until Carolina matched there was no way to 100% say for certain so I guess a couple of those people ran with it.
Its not like it wasn't a worthwhile try. I mean whats the downside here? If they get him, they get him for cheap. If they don't, they basically gift wrap him for Carolina at the cost of having to pay him more up front then they'd have liked.. I'm not sure why people are spinning this so negatively. Is Montreal really afraid of Carolina getting revenge? Montreal's offer sheet could only benefit them because of their "assumed" liquid cash at their disposal that they thought Dundon might not be willing to part with. Its not like the Canes can turn back around and try the same thing and MTL not accept. Canes are up to the cap so they aren't in a position to offer sheet anyone really and if its an overpay that MTL can't do, I think any team would gladly take the compensation for one of those type OS's, right?
I think the only thing that can be said is if MB really was serious about trying to get Aho, he should have pushed it to the max so that regardless of Dundon's budget, they'd have to at least think about it as the compensation would be heck of a lot more than it was. Worse case, they still match but have to pay Aho more than he deserves. Kind of a win/win for the Habs if that's the case, at the cost of probably losing a trade partner in Waddell.
I have no problem with this offer sheet attempt. I just don't like how he framed it to his fan base and the media. Rather than just say it was an attempted offer sheet and they really like the player plus he actually accepted the offer for starters. He basically said he thinks Dundon is cash strapped so he might not be willing to match it. My first thought was why even give someone who potentially doesn't have the actual money and might have to lose the player, that kind of bad publicity by saying that?........
It was a worthwhile try but his reasoning made him look smug about it for someone who ultimately was playing a hunch.
