Hardball with Marner

Created by: GolfBall
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2019
Published: Sep. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let me start by saying I'm a big Marner fan, but this contract nonsense has gone on proportionately longer than my interest in it. I would offer Marner 2 contract choices. Choice 1 $11M over 8 years or Option 2 $7M over 3 years. I would not inflate his 3rd year salary as I want him to sign Choice 1. Since I'm more interested in winning the Stanley Cup than inflating his Agent's paycheque I would tell him the offer expires at the start of the regular season. I would make it quite clear that if he doesn't choose either option, the Leafs are going into the market and buying the best available player for its needs thus consuming our cap space and rather than trade him, let him sit out a season & in all likelihood offer him a contract based in reality or trade his rights, next summer. Will this make his Agent happy, we don't care. We want to win the Stanley Cup and we feel Marner can help us do that, but his contract demands are not reasonable so the Leafs have decided to act.

Am trying to pare diown roster and create cap space. I don't care from which team we get draft picks, Anaheim was merely first alphabetically.

No we don't. By Oct 2nd, you either have Mitch under contract, or have decided to sign someone else. The Dec 1st date becomes relevant only to Mitch. The Leafs hold the cards, they just need to want to play them. Note: They could relent and sign him to a better deal Nov 30th, but only if they took steps to address the cap space issue their replacement player causes. Again, they hold the cards.

The December deadline is useless marner can’t sign December 1 unless he’s signing at 6.9 like nylander leafs can’t do the first year cap hit

Pridham will find a way. This issue is the prorating not applying to ltir. The issue is that marner can recieve an offershert till dec 1st. You need to keep cap space to protect lowball offersheets.

Thank goodness this guy isn't the GM huh...
One thing is definite tho if Marner sits til Nov 29...less money for him at that time regardless of team.

The leafs aren't going to let marner sit so lets just stop right there.
They saw what happened with Nylander sitting so long. They can't have that happen to marner and still compete for a cup.
One way or another a deal will be had very soon.
