thank god they signed a realistic deal and not the one like with Spooner two years ago. He has now the time to show he is valuable to the team for next year signing. I believe he could be a great 4th liner and successful teams need good 4th lines. Even if I am not an Islander fan I always liked their 4th line of Martin, Cizikas, Clutterbuck (they were much cheaper in 2016) and they were a lot of fun. Lemieux, Fast and Lias could be a good combo.

Not long ago, players like Lemieux would have been guaranteed a pay raise. Until the new NHL...with premium players getting a bigger piece of the cap, players like Lemieux are getting squeezed.
Interesting how the NHLPA with the majority of it's members mid to bottom end players, adjust to the new pay structure of their members.

If the Rangers had more cap space I could've seen him getting 2x1.5M or 3x2-2.5M, but this is pretty much all they could afford as it stands now. Tony D hopefully signs soon too

They don't have cap space, they still haven't signed DeAngelo

I think they should strongly consider a cap on the percentage of the cap that a player can make. For example, if the upper limit of the cap is $81.5M, the most a UFA/RFA can sign for would be 15% of the cap ($12.225M AAV). This would prevent runaway salaries for elite players and ensure that players like Lemieux are paid commensurate w/ their contributions. They've already taken many steps to spur competitive balance and fair cap structures by capping term of contract at 8 years. Buyout clause also helps, as does other aspects of the CBA.

There's gotta be a trade on the horizon, right? Namestnikov or Smith?

Smith will get get sent down to the AHL; as should McKegg. That will give the Rangers another 1.7M or so. They'll have the space to sign DeAngelo, but I do think they should move Namestnikov.

Great deal for the Rangers. A real pain to play against for their 4th line for <$1M. I still can't believe they turned Hayes and Pionk (two free assets) into Trouba and this kid.

Totally called that salary on 1 year deal.
So it stands, approximately 1 million only for DeAngelo?

I think he sits or goes Eurpoe or KHL if that is all that is offered.

If he can control his attitude and not be so arrogant then this will be a good deal. He has to remember that he's not "Mario" Lemieux. This kid needs to prove himself and just shut his mouth and play hockey.

? wanna give the audience some context? (with, like, actual links, and not just hearsay) 'cause, uh... this is pretty out of left field otherwise.

Great signing, could move up the depth charts.

Smith will likely be sent to the minors, Namestnikov is on the block, but not sure how many teams are looking to spend that much $$$$. If there are no other forward injuries- he could be sent down too- even if its only temporary to get under the cap. He could turn his career around quickly..but not sure how long the Rangers can wait.

He's an opportunistic "prick." He figured out a way to make over $4M AAV as a 4th pair D.

No contract is even close to 20% of the cap. Try building a competitive team with 2-3 players eating up half the cap. That's where the league is headed. And that's the point of what I was trying to say.

I think Namestnikov would be an extremely valuable asset...if only he made $2M instead of $4M. He does a lot of things well, but I'm afraid the Rangers will be forced to surrender a pick/prospect in order to offload either him or especially Smith. I don't see any other options. Tony D is gonna cost $3M+, even on a bridge.

Yes like when he yaps at other players and acts like they are beneath him and throws his "actual wallet" at people because he's bragging about having cash. He just needs to grow up and behave like a Professional whenever and wherever he his. He's a talented player who's young so lets not trash him too much but holding him accountable is another thing and he should welcome that.
