Description

I don’t really know the rules exactly so... if a team offer sheets Marner at 1 year 10.5M and he signs it, does that team or the Leafs if they match have to offer him at least 10.5M per year on his next contract??

Leafs would match, but it’s not over 20 mil so Marner doesn’t sign it

Yes. That's how it worked with Aho. Habs offered a contract, Aho signed it, Canes matched it, Aho contrsct is exactly what the Habs offered him

His QO as an rfa would be 10.5 mil at least yes/

The contract could be made up of signing bonus + salary. The salary portion determines the amount of next years qualifying offer. The team has to submit a qualifying offer to maintain the RFA status of the player after July 1 (or the date qualifying offers are required to be done) If the team does not do a qualifying offer the RFA becomes a UFA and free to sign anywhere without compensation to the original team or the chance to match

It is about the salary in the final year. If a contract is all salary at 7 million (for example) his qa would be 7aav. If it was 6mil in SBs and 1 mil in salary his qa would be 1aav

Ok then if I was a Stanley cup contender and had the cap space then I would offer sheet him 10.5M all salary on a 1 year contract. ( I know it all depends on him signing it ) If the Leafs don’t match and I can’t afford Marner after the 1 year then I trade him for a nice package to help in the future.
