They must have promised him crazy more next contract b/c you don't wait this long to sign a basic deal like that.

yeah and Pettersson already said he was okay to wait to get his contract; hard to believe that's what he wanted
(unless Labanc called him and convinced him tears of joy)

So, with that deal, is PIT going to go with a 22 men roster? It could work this year with no trade, but good luck next year

I think the hope is that Jack Johnson plays much better this year that they can finally trade him and get some sort of value back or taken in expansion because Riikola should be a solid 3rd pair LHD by then. Addison should be ready to jump into the top 6, if not top 4 by next year. I think Bjugs or Rust still will get traded next year too cause Blueger should be the 3C by then. I don’t think the pens will be in too bad of shape next year tbh.

Nah, Addison won't be ready, POJ and Marino will be before him, but depth d men aren't the issue, we have Ruhwedel, Riikola, Trotman POJ, and Marino, it's losing Schultz will leave a void in the top 4 that nobody is ready to fill yet, plus we have to resign Galch, probably around 6 (leaving us with 14 mil) let's say 6 for Murray as well (8 mil) 3 each for Kahun and McCann (2 mil) someone to fill Schultz's spot (assuming it's like an ELC, 1 mil) plus filling out HS's and such uses the rest of that, and leaves Simon and MP (who's gonna want to get paid) left unsigned... Say rust goes, but then you need to find someone to replace him... That's at least another mil gone probably... It's not looking good (plz trade Horny/JJ)

If Kahun gets 45+ pts, he can easily get $3-4M or so. Depends on the term but I think he can

Yeah, my projections were for the most part somewhat best case scenario, or at least on the lower end

What makes you think Addison isn’t going to be ready by next season? And like I said, the goal is that JJ has a good season. They can get rid of that cap hit. If Marino is ready next year, boom Gudbranson is gone too. If POJ is also ready next year, then they are set on D. Blueger will be ready to be 3 C which makes Rust or Bjugs easily tradable. Either trade Bjugs or trade rust and move Bjugs to RW. Bjorkqvist will be for sure ready by next year. Simon will be cheap.
The pens have roughly 20 million in cap space next year.
If they do what is expected then...
Trade JJ, Bjugstad, Gudbranson adds 11.35 million to that.
Galchenyuk at 6.5 million
Petterson at 4.5 million
McCann at 3.5 million
Kahun at 3.5 million
Murray at 7 million
Simon at 2 million
That’s only 27 million of the 31.350 million in cap space.
Addison at 925k
Riikola at 925k
POJ at 925k
Marino at 925k
Bjorkqvist at 925k
That puts them at roughly 30.5 million of the 31.35 million in cap space. And that’s on the high end of contracts for those players.

I just think Addison will need some time to get used to the pro game, he has such a high ceiling we can't mess up with him, don't rush him, and I don't think any of the specs are ready for top 4 minutes, so we'd have to either resign Schultz (6ish) or keep Guddy and play him with MP... Not the best option, but based off previous performance (very good) and price/other options at a similar price that's probably the best we'd be able to do without making a trade

This was pretty much my point. Gudbranson and JJ aren't easy to trade. If your scenario depends on those trades, I wish you luck. Otherwise, interesting post. I understand better your team's problems (not a PIT fan)

Gudbranson is only a hard trade for the fact that we don’t have a righty to take his place. Ruhwedel and Trotman are decent depth players but not everyday players. They get exposed that way. If Addison impresses to the point that he makes it impossible to send him back to juniors and becomes an everyday player, they’d trade Gudbranson easy. Next year becomes even easier to trade him as there is only 1 year left on his deal. His buyout option isn’t bad either. JJ is the only one that has a high chance of failing imo. Also gotta take into consideration Seattle expansion.
