The Leafs will have to make a trade when Hyman is healthy

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 13, 2019
Published: Sep. 13, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Right?

They're below the cap floor with Dermott and Hyman on the IR.

Dermott will make about the same as his replacement so him coming back doesn't effect the cap much.

But Hyman makes about 1.5 more than his replacement which is a little over 1 million above the cap

I believe your analysis is right. Hey now we talk Leaf trades and not the Marner contract.

I don't particularly like the signing but I'm just happy it's done (when I think about it, I suspect that was Ferris' goal to get the Leafs and Leafs nation to that point.)

They can go with a 21-man roster after Hyman and Dermott are healthy, but they'll have under 100k in space. Babs seems to be ok with that (he brought that up in his presser yesterday).

Although I don't particularly like the contract compared to other RFAs, I look at some other signings recently and I think the Leafs got a OK deal. Koptitar, Doughty, Sequin, Hayes, , Couture, Vlasic, Karlsson take their long term contract into mid to late thirties. Marner at his peak...getting a big contract just might be the new wave of NHL contracts.

7 D 12 forwards or 6 D 13 Forwards? Either way you're in trouble if you get an injury or 2

I'm sure Dubas and Pridham will know of some obscure cap loophole to get out of an injury jam. Probably keep an extra D, maybe Barrie can play forward if he needs to, considering his great skating.

Tbh I would love to see Barrie get a chance on forward again. He's had a couple trials on forward before but that was many years ago, I'm curious how he would do

If the need is there, why not? I mean I'd rather see him on D with Muzzin (potentially the most underrated pairing in the league) but it could happen. He has all the tools.

I don't think the pa will let them get away with less than 23 players for more than a few weeks. There were rumblings of the same back when Calgary did it for a few weeks a few years ago.

I think a trade happens

The cap is based on a daily total (when a player is moved you take on the remaining cap hit of the season hence the trade deadline cap note on this site) so they can make paper moves to try and save money early in the season so when Hyman comes back they don’t go over. I’m not sure how easy they can save the 600k number I’ve seen but I’m sure they’ll find a way.

It'll never happen, but I'd love if Guerin could swing a trade for Nylander.
