Minnesot'a biggest issue is their owner, who refuses to sanction a tear-down/rebuild. The Wild are not going to be contenders any time soon. Spurgeon could have net valuable draft/prospect assets but instead the team will continue to try to contend.

Minnesota continues to pick terrible GM's.
A 29 YO defensemen who put up 40 points gets paid for 7 years at a high AAV.

Sorry 'soda fans

Bill Guerin is getting things done

but Wild might be the oldest team in the league, but no where near a cup... a trade for future assets might have been a better plan

I guess that's a positive way to look at it.

Minnesota is the next Detroit, with tons of veterans on long, expensive contracts with no way to get rid of them. But unlike Detroit, they don't have anything to show for it.

yeah not sure about this one Wild fans. Guy is 29, putting up a contract that'll lock him up until he's 36... I mean he puts up decent points for a d-man but in even 3 years his production will almost definitely drop off significantly. Not worth $7.6M, maybe $5.5M at most.

Of note, they finally have a contract that expires after Suter and Parise are off the books.

Maybe firing Paul Fenton wasn’t the move

Firing the owner would bring about the change you want. Guerin and Fenton are just doing what their boss pays them to do.

The term is not ideal, but the cap hit is perfectly fine. Spurgeon is arguably the most underrated defenseman in the league.

Can anyone argue Spurgeon is better then Provorov. Not a Flyers fan but I personally think there's way more upside in the Provorov deal

I am a Flyers fan and yes, Spurgeon is MUCH better than Provorov.

REALITY is any long term deal will be an "initial 1M overpay".. 6 years later.. with cap rises and AAV inflation probably around 25% or higher .. it will look good as long as performance there .. Spurgeon age is only issue I see here compared to Poporkov deal but Spureron less risky/ know what he is

He'll be nearly 31 when this deal kicks in. What a joke. These are the exact types of deals that cripple a franchise for years. This makes the Seabrook deal look a lot better!
