I don't even mind the AAV, but 7 years? That's a long time for a soon-to-be 30-year-old who still has a year left on his current deal.

Spurgeon is a great dman–and, if you're an analytics nerd, one of the best in the league. But this is not a good contract because of its length and his age.

Had Spurgeon been two years younger, or if this deal was for only five years, it'd be good. However, that is clearly not the case.

Can anyone argue Spurgeon is better then Provorov. Not a Flyers fan but I personally think there's way more upside in the Provorov deal

It's not even close. Provorov is also like 8 years younger.

I don't get why people are saying this is a great deal? The guy will be 37 when the contract is over. It's a high cap hit at an horrible lenght.

Minnesota goes older and older and this is definitely not the way of being able to finally come out of their perennial mediocrity.

Seems like the Wild replaced Fenton with Fenton

AAV is fine, spurg is one of the best shut down dmen in the league with offense to boot, but 7 years?!?! Boy they shoulda traded him for futures...

Should have been a 3-5 year deal, even if the AAV has to go up to compensate.

The term is not ideal, but the cap hit is perfectly fine. Spurgeon is arguably the most underrated defenseman in the league.

I would argue hard he is not.

And giving him a TOP 10 NHL defenceman caphit is ridiculous.

It really is not ridiculous. Spurgeon is an incredible defensive defenseman while being offensively productive and driving play. How would you argue that he is not underrated?

Well he is not Hedman, Carlson or Trouba (When he will get to his prime) good. But he got the same money.

Cast your vote for him for the next Norris Trophy winner if you want, but you will be the only one and that won't be because he is underrated.

There is nothing you can do to convince me that signing a 5'9 defense man till he's 36-37 years old is a smart decision.
Especially at 7.5 million.
Can anyone name me one defense man 35+ who is 5'9???????
I can't think of one.

Sure, he's not Hedman, but he is certainly not worse than Carlson and he is much better than Trouba. He is regarded as a top ~10 defenseman in the analytics community FWIW.

I'm not saying Spurgeon is a top 3 defenseman, but this contract is fair for what he brings and the fact that so many people think it is a 'ridiculous' contract just speaks to how underrated he is.

I am a Flyers fan and yes, Spurgeon is MUCH better than Provorov.

Provorov is more about the future and Spurgeon is a win now signing. Both do the opposite

I think I would've been fine with $9M for 4 years. But, this contract will be trade-proof in 4 years and probably buyout-proof, as well.

He's not anywhere close to the level of anyone around him in terms of AAV.
He's ideally a top 3 defensemen on a perfect team. Doesn't help that this contract starts around the time most defenders start toregress.

He's better than OEL, Ekblad, Trouba, Carlson, Byfuglien, probably Subban and Weber, too.

What's a perfect team? A team with the best six defensemen in the league?

I sort of agree with this, there's definitely a chance that the AAV will be a bit high in the last two years or so, but then again, the cap will be higher.

term may be brutal at the end of the contract if there ends up being a lot of signing bonuses in this.
