Leafs next year Not much RFA drama

Created by: palhal
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2019
Published: Sep. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap went up only 2m last season, don't see if how it goes up more next year. The Canadian $$$ has declined and rumours of recession looms. The bottom three UFA Dmen signings. Yep there lots of fluidity of who actually gets signed. Leafs cap problems, not so bad at all. If necessary a forward could be traded so cap is available for a more expensive Dman.

We'll see. Dmen can look crappy on crappy teams. Who know Ceci might flourish on a good team with good parter. But really a lot of the Ceci distain on CapFriendly is the "sheep followers". When a player gets a reputation for being lousy, the sheep just pile on.
How many posts did we have last year the all Leafs defencemen (except Reilly) weren't of NHL calibre. Hard to believe that a top 10 team has such so many lousy Dmen. The sheep at times just can't have think independently.

I suspect Ceci wouldn't want to take an aav cut to stay.

I figure he either isn't that good and is let go, or he is and signs at or above his aav.

I don't think Weber is an upgrade on an AHL/NHL tweener. I wouldn't waste the 700k to sign him over one of our prospects.

Holl does not deserve much over league minimum. He isn't an every day NHLer. He is a good guy to have in the press box to spot you games for injuries to short for IR but who's development you aren't afraid of stunting by keeping him out of games. I know it's only like 250k extra, but frankly I just don't see him deserving it.

Thanks for noticing. Yea they might have been overpaid, but I was being generous. Kinda proving a point, there is cap available.

The superior Gardiner took a 4.05m X 4 deal. There just might not be much cap available in the league to go around. My thinking if Ceci plays well, maybe he found a niche with the Leafs. In a few days the NHLPA can make open up the CBA and a possible strike in 2020/21 Leafs might be in a good position with their RFA or UFAs. They could offer signing bonuses for July 2020, guaranteeing a nice payday strike or not. But as I said in the narrative...lot of fluidity with any UFA signing

You're also leaving out that every year there's an Ennis or Spezza available for a cheap 1 year deal with minimal risk to the Leafs. Who knows who it will be next year, but Dubas has been good about finding value there.
