Think this is where most people expected him to land 4-5m on a 2-3 year deal due to his rfa status. He has a decent QO of 7.3m but I would think he probably gets inked to an extension before his QO is due. Sound about right @Bcarlo25 think you had him a touch lower but that was before werenski signed his bridge.

McAvoy and Werenski with the best deals this off season

Kevin Labanc and Timo Meier disagree.

That's pretty cheap for a top pair defenseman.
But I guess Werenski set the bar.

I had him lower on a 2 year but I thought it would be 5.5 for 3. I think two years from now he signs an extension to make him the highest paid d man in the league

lol

Watch him play all 82 games this year and put 50+ pts like you want

For the " not sure if he's better than Werenski "
That's a steal/perfect deal. mcavvsweren-1.png?w=607&h=500

These charts mean very little ... you can just as easily make another one to disagree with it.

chart means nothing when he's out half the year. Look at that ice time, it's half as much!
He has yet to be on the ice a full year. I honestly don't think he ever will be. Talented guy, but injury prone.

McAvoy is the only one of the 3 who is actually worth the contract they got, so the fact that he got LESS is insane value for the B's.
Goddammit.

I'd pay McAvoy about 8, Werenski like 6.5 and Provorov like 4.75 on 6-year deals without really digging into it. I don't think the Werenski deal is bad at all

it's not mistaken at all. McAvoy played 54 games last year and ZW played 82 getting a ton of minutes.
McAvoy is always hurt. Over 2 years he's missed like 50 games.
That's like 1/3 of the time.
You can ignore it, or you can realize it's fact. With his injury history especially with concussions it's hard to look past it. This is a guy who is a huge risk to sign to a big money long term deal.
It's why I don't think your chart means anything. in 3 seasons ZW has never missed more than 5 games.
It's night and day who is getting more out of their guy.

I don't know, people want to say this is a good deal but I'm not buying it.

McAvoy has injury issues. His production because of it was a lot lower.
Is he a better player than ZW, not sure on that. 5 million is a lot to have tied up in guys who miss a lot of games. I would have signed him to less and said show me you can stay healthy. I don't know if he can. Players know he has injury history so he's got a target on his back from any bad actors. When Chara retires I think this kid gets run.

First of all, he played 63 and 54 games in his first two seasons. Both are more than half season so 1/3 is false. That's 77% and 66% of the seasons. Second, McAvoy would just be better if he played more games. If you saw how he played in the playoffs, you understand. " Injury " are one of my last concerns about him, he'll play 72+ next year watch out

I'm a stats guy.
Werenski is... Not.

Which isn't to say he is bad, just overpaid.
Same way marner is sick but overpaid.

He missed roughly 20 the first year, and 30 the second that's 50. 80+80 = 160.....50/160 is roughly 1/3
It's called rounding dude.

I mean I go hard by stats as well - even with that I'd retract no more than maybe a mil or so from Werenski. If it was 5 for 6 I'd say it's fine. The problem would be that his best season by far is his rookie year, but someone like Ekblad - whom I really doubted, has turned it around in his last year or two after also having a good rookie season and not much else. It's obviously betting on potential.

I'd just be careful with saying the Werenski contract is bad just because McAvoy happened to sign a ridiculously good deal. The Nylander and Draisaitl contracts are still good - it's just that the Pastrnak contract sticks out as great in comparison

Edit: The Morrissey contract also looks great in comparison. If the overall point was that highly drafted defensemen get good contracts for basically playing minutes I'd agree, especially compared to later draft picks doing as well or better in those minutes

IDK about the highest paid D-man part, but I agree on the extension. A few years is when we clear a lot of our older contracts and I imagine Chara will be done. At that point you sign McAvoy to an 8-yr deal and give him the keys to the defense...assuming he hasn't taken them by then lol.

great contract.

defensemen take longer to peak so like the werenski contract, gives him time to flourish without being under the gun, and allows for a higher deal when other guys come off the books.
