Idk if that's just wishful thinking on the Athletic's part but that price seems awfully low.

Why the stars qualified him i have no idea. He isnt a nhler and i dont see him ever being one. With all the injures dallas had last year on d he played 29 games which was less games then fedun who up until then was a career ahler. 8 more games then oleksiak who we traded for mid season and got injured. played 10 more games then bayruether who looked much better and could make the team out of camp this year possibly or be a mid season call up. For him to have a shot at playing next year in dallas at least 6 guys would have to be hurt and even then i would feel more comfortable with some random dude from the echl stepping in ahead of him.

You really haven’t paid attention to Honka then. Is he the top pair, offensive defenseman he was drafted to be? No. Is he an underutilized, misused defenseman that could still be a solid bottom-4 RHD? Absolutely. If you don’t believe me, go take a look at his 2018-2019 puck possession, and puck-moving numbers here:

Also, the Stars qualified his contract so that they retain his rights and hold the right to trade him. Really simple decision by Jim Nill. Qualify him, trade him, and get something for him vs. losing him to free agency for nothing.
