I don't think any of those three defensive newcomers are going to get much NHL experience this season, so this may be a decent backcourt two years from now, but I doubt it will be NHL quality in 2020-2021.

Spurgeon is actually worth that money though (term is scary tho), Barrie is wildly overrated. Invest in Muzzin on a shorter term deal instead, he's a little older than Barrie but is a far better defender.

I think if he has a decent year this season, Muzzin could be re-upped for somewhere in the $5MM - $5.5MM for 4 or 5 years; the advantage there (in addition to economy) is that Toronto would have only the right side to improve, not both.

Once again we see the adverse effect of overpaying Marner and Nylander. If those two worthies had been inked at a more reasonable $9MM and $7MM, there would be room for two more entry-level contracts and Toronto would have a 23-man roster even paying Barrie $7.5MM. Pay Muzzin $5.5MM instead and there is room for FOUR ELC's.

Yea he might get a Spurgeon deal but not from the Leafs. Leafs aren't getting in a bidding war and won't be going with 21 man roster...again, cause 21 man roster are detrimental to the team.

Hyman will be 28 this June - and at his physical 'peak'. Trade him and another prospect (?) and maybe Dubas/Pridham can make the numbers work to retain Barrie and also secure another top 4 D?

Sound logic there and I agree that Marner's deal should've been much cheaper, but not sure what you mean about Nylander? His cap hit last year was 10.277M because he signed late, but for the next 6 years he's making 6.962M

My idea is that Nylander should have been signed for $7MM (his actual deal is $7.5MM) sooner; even though that results in a (minimally) higher cap hit for him over the last 5 years of his contract, it still would have been a more reasonable figure and led to a lower figure for Marner. My point is that Dubas got rolled not just by Marner and his gang but by Nylander and his entourage, too.

Ah, I see what you're saying about Willy's money now. I still think that Dubas would've gotten a world of **** from Marner's camp regardless of what Nylander signed for, as all the rhetoric from Paul and his agent was about getting "Matthews Money" as soon as 34 got his extension, and it was never really about trying to make X amount more than Nylander makes. The best play would've been to sign him before John Tavares handed him a career year on a silver platter, but I don't think that was ever really an option. Dubas has made really good trades and free agent signings so far, but I think RFA negotiation is his Achilles heel.

No, he doesn't. His contract is for $7.5MM per year, front-loaded. The cap hit changes because he signed after the first year started. My point is that Dubas should have signed him for $500,000 less (AAV) and gotten him on the ice in November, not December. Nylander's cap hit is not what he gets in real dollars each year.

His cap hit is all that matters to us fans. It's all that matters to signing others as above

Most players don't make what their cap hit is every year. His AAV from now on is slightly less than $7m. After this year he'll get paid $6m/yr but still be the same slightly less than $7m AAV.
