Rangers would be gagging on the cap next year. Possible bonus carryover, Shattenkirk's 6.1m buyout. Not that the Jets would agree to the trade. But the Jets would get two NHLers for one for their playoff push this year, and it would help resolve their cap for this year

I actually think the rangers would be ok cap wise next year. The increase in Shatty dead space is covered by the decrease in Girardi dead space and Namestnikov retention. Laine takes away the need to give Kreider a bad contract, so he's either traded at the deadline or let walk in FA. Beleskey dead cap is gone. K'Andre Miller or Yegor Rykov likely makes the jump next year, so Smith would be burried in Hartford. Georgiev is likely traded to make room for Shesterkin, so they don't have to worry about that contract discussion. Only two that would really need new contracts are Lemieux and potentially Fast, which I think are both easily manageable.

As for whether WPG would even consider... That's another story
