It's not like he broke a bone or tore a ligament. He had a blood clot that required heart surgery to remove. It came from central retinal artery in his left eye and even with blood thinners he still doesn't have full vision in his left eye.

The last article I read said his peripheral vision had returned but he couldn't see straight ahead with his left eye, You have to have at least 20/400 (after correction) vision to play in the NHL. So I'd say it is unlikely but I'm not a Ophthalmologist. Bryan Berard caught a high stick to his eye and returned to the NHL.

20/200 is legally blind, so I would be surprised if Mantha is worse than 20/400

Mantha may recover and play hockey again, but it won't be in Edmonton. IMO he was a distant bell to ever make the NHL anyhow, and this unfortunate set-back will be too much to overcome.
