Since he is a reasonably cheap and a UFA, probably a very moveable contract at the deadline to a contender looking for depth. Kings are really paying for 50-60 games of Hutton's services and then a 4th round pick.

Good deal for the Kings as he's a capable enough puck mover to play left side on either of their bottom two pairings as they are pretty thin team on the blueline. He has experience playing for bad teams and putting up big minus numbers which should help if they're shooting for Lafrenière. If he surprises and improves his compete level in his own zone maybe LA can move him at the deadline.

Comparing two recently signed defenders Hutton v. Carlo
shows he should be decent enough playing further down the lineup at least in terms of possession metrics.

Hutton is actually a good player, everyone. Good signing for the Kings. Definitely a top-6 defenseman in my opinion, probably top-4 on the Kings.

With Forbort out he is top two partnering with Doughty.

I don't know how it took so long for someone to sign him at $1,500,000 ???

If LA decides to trade him at the deadline (with 50% retained) ...

He'll likely return a pick between the 2nd and 5th round (depending on his play this year).

You can't go much wrong wth Hutton at 1.5m. Kings should be more worried about the 11m Doughty, 10m Kopitar 10m long term and Kovi at 6.25m for two more years
