Buff retires Ceci a Jet

Created by: palhal
Team: 2019-20 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 18, 2019
Published: Sep. 18, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hard to believe a person walks away 15m but it might happen. Jets need a RHD, and IMO Ceci will be just fine on good team with good team mates. Jets gain some cap space to sign Connor and Laine quickly. Leafs might no be as good without Ceci, but they gain much needed cap space so they can ice a full roster, so maybe that's their on ice benefit.

Kovalchuk walked away from something close to a 100m when he retired from the NHL to go back to Russia.
Buff potentially walking away from 15m to ensure he lives a happy and healthy life for the rest of his days, something we all should applaud

also there is no recapture penalty.

To be fair, Kovi had a contract in Russia where he was supposed to make more (although he ended up with less thanks to the ruble falling lol).
But yeah, Buff has made 66 million dollars in his career. 14 mil is a lot but being healthy for the rest of his life is far more important (especially when he already has 66 mil)

Agreed. Whats another million to an already millionaire. Guy can just live out the rest of his life happily if he wanted right now without ever having to worry about money ever again.

Why do the leafs need to free up 4.5m? This leaves us with just Barrie as a competent nhl RHD. Swapping places with the jets seems like a very bad move. Leafs will be playing ceci this year.

Winnipeg wouldn't exactly confirm the issue with me, but I believe it is family-related and he's asked the team if it was there was any way they could trade him to his hometown, Minnesota. Minnesota pre-Guerin has already had discussions with Winnipeg re: Laine for Dumba, so I wonder if that deal gets revisited with added pieces. It could be something like Laine and Buff for Dumba, Zucker (who they've tried to trade multiple times in the past 6 months) plus additional pieces (not exactly sure what that would be).

Im sure he is more than comfortable for the rest of his life living in Minny, just fishing and boating without a care in the world.

Appears the Leafs are forced to go with 21m roster with Ceci. If Ceci traded the Leafs could add his replacement and two other players for 3.5 or so and be under the cap. Now I think Ceci will be just fine as a Leaf (or Jet), and his replacement on the Leafs may not be as good. But at the Leafs could go with with a full roster, and gain some cap room for maybe another addition at some time...that would be the Leaf benefit.
My own preference is to retain Ceci as Leaf and work around the cap somehow.

Cap space doesn’t accrue on ltir so what they have is what they have. Who is this mystery replacement that we get for free? If leafs need to move anyone it will be Hyman. That will free up enogh money to run a 22-23 man roster. Leafs have plenty of. Arable winger and kapanen appears to be doing fine on that line.

I like the premise of this @palhal.

Maybe after this move Leafs say trade the pick for Honka and add him, he has top4 potential and he would get minutes here which is what he is looking for.

I like Ceci for this year only here, but I do not like going so razor this roster wise.
This would give us room to breathe.

Thanks for liking the premise. Yeah it a type of option for both teams. If Honda is available that's a might be a nice move by the Leafs...or heck lots of teams want a RHD.

My most realistic dream is that Ceci plays well a a Leaf this year. He's a UFA, and feels comfortable here and signs an extension. Forget overpaying for Barrie and Muzzin, maybe Ceci is a long term guy
Reilly, Dermot, Sandin, Liljegren and Ceci....that's five for next year.

Liljegren has top four potential as well as Duszak and Hollowell... but there is a reason why we got ceci rather than use them. He is a top 4 Dman. I don’t feel confident about having honka play top 4 minutes with Rielly. If leafs are going to move anyone it is most likely Hyman.

If that move can be held off, I say do it.
    I view Hyman as intangible.

We dont have enough players like him and he for sure is likely down here in Toronto st the end of the deal bo matter what.

According to people of knowledge from Dallas, Honka is good enough but will not get the time or day in Dallas.

Our top3 D of Rielly, Muzzin, and Barrie will be good and once Dermott returns even better.

Dallas was hurting last year for rhd with johns out for the entire season. honka dropped below Roman polak and Taylor Fedun... and now you want him on the leafs top pair? He is not defensively strong. He may still have some potential but the leafs can’t put some possible potential in the top 4. Trade for honka and let him take bottom pair this year and see if he can blossomed m a bit for next year. But you aren’t replacing ceci with honka.
