Tkachuk Contract - Slow the Hype Train a Bit

Created by: SAR

Description
Keep hearing $8.5M, $9M, $10M contracts being discussed on mid-term deals (5-6 years) for Tkachuk. Think we need to slow the hype-train a bit. Tkachuk played on a good team last year. Played top PP minutes, and played with good players. He brings intangibles that can't be quantified by stats or advanced stats, but he also has his own weaknesses (such as skating/speed). He is a really good player, but not a superstar. PPG during the entry level deal isn't the be-all end-all, but is an important comparable in the market place. Position (Center vs Winger) is also important. Some perspective:

Points per game during entry level deals so far in NHL career:

Auston Matthews (Center): 0.97 PPG – 5 x $11.634M
Mitch Marner (Winger): 0.93 PPG – 6 x $10.893M
Mikko Rantanen (Winger): 0.87 PPG
Brayden Point (Center): 0.86 PPG
Brock Boeser (Winger): 0.83 PPG – 3 x $5.875M
Sebastian Aho (Center): 0.81 PPG – 5 x $8.454M *Offer Sheet
Patrick Laine (Winger): 0.78 PPG
Matthew Tkachuk (Winger): 0.78 PPG
Jake Guentzel (Winger): 0.77 PPG – 5 x $6M

Tkachuk Very Fair Contract Offers:

3-Year Bridge = $6.3M AAV
4-Year Deal = $6.75M AAV (Walks to Free Agency)
5-Year Deal = $7.3M
6-Year Deal - $7.75M

Unfortunately if a Tkachuk deal can't be reached in this ball-park (give or take 5-10%), Treliving should look to trade him rather than decimating the entire salary structure on the team. Tkachuk is arguably the teams 4th best player.

I think a 3 year bridge looks a lot more like what you have for 4 years.

There you go talking logic regarding RFA contracts, as if there is any logic. Saying Tzachuk is the fourth best flame. Matthews might have been the fifth best Leafs last year behind Tavares, Marner, Reilly and Anderson and somehow he pulls off the 2nd highest paid player in the league. Yeah I know you're paying for "futures", but still.

4th best player... Or 4th best forward! I would put at least 1 if not 2 of our D before him...

Bridge Deal - 3 year @ 6.5-7 per year... Re-sign with a year left for a full 8 years at what he is worth...

The deal is good for Chucky as he gets UFA money sooner... And good for the team as they get through the current cap crunch!
