A fair deal for Laine

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2019-20 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 14, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With Buff taking care of personal problems and Laine's recent comments, it might be time for Winnipeg to deal Laine and get some help to retool the team. Currently, Winnipeg only has 15 mil in cap space but two really good players to sign. Connor can command at least 6 to 7 mil easy. However, Laine is insistent on at least 10 mil per. Math doesn't work. Plus, right now as it sits the Jets if they did find a way to sign both, will still be difficult to ice a team considering they only have 10 forwards on the main roster. Now, that's not saying they can't use AHL players in the meantime but it does create a flexibility issue with injuries.

Laine long term doesn’t make sense rn IMO. He probably wants a bridge too so he can get paid more. Also I think this is a fair deal for Laine, although unless it’s texxier over Milano you’d probably have to send them a top 5 protected 2020 1st.

Anderson is better than Laine straight up, and he will probably sign his next deal for $5m-$6m, so this deal is way off. Thanks anyway, but no.

Ok can you explain why Anderson is better than Laine?

Anderson’s numbers have improved over the last couple years, Laine’s regressed a bit after his 1st year. Anderson plays a heavier game, including hits and willingness to muck it up when necessary, and he is and will be on a more team friendly contract than what rumor s of what Laine wants on his next contract. CB J traded away the last “star” forward who thought too highly of himself, Ryan Johanssen, and got a superstar in return in Seth Jones, who also signed a team friendly contract.

Laine's rookie season he had 36g - 28a - 64p in his second year he ha 44g - 26a - 70p last season he 30g - 20a - 50p. So the regression was between seasons 2 and 3. He did have a bad year and he still put up 30 goals. In 3 seasons Laine has 110 goals and during those 3 seasons only 5 players scored more goals Matthews had 111, Tavares and McDavid each had 112. Now I think Anderson is a very good player and I can understand why you might like him more than Laine. But saying Anderson is straight up better than Laine is a big stretch.

Seth Jones is easily one of the best defensemen in the NHL but he didn't really break out until his first full season in Columbus before that he was just a solid defenseman. So that comparison really doesn't fit because Laine has kept up with the best scores in the league for 3 years now.

Anderson is good but Laine is a premier goal scorer. Anderson can and probably will get better. However, with players like Emil Bemstrom and Foudy coming some point within a year or two, the team is going to be very crowded. Anderson is due a new contract after this season and he will be coming for a good chunk of change considering his past negotiations. The Jackets also have Dubois to sign as well. Making a move like this allows the Jackets flexibility on the cap and gives them a premier young goal scorer for long term. You gotta give to get.
