This is what we do when buff retires

Created by: tsyls
Team: 2019-20 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 19, 2019
Published: Sep. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sign Connor and laine both long term, then do nothing.

Don’t give laine any NTC or NMC for 4 years.

Copp looked really good so I could see him jumping to 2c this year if things progress like they are now. Chibisov IMO is a tanev replacement, he seems more in-tune with his offensive side of the game but can’t quite skate as fast. Also kulikov looked like he was playing a real solid game, could see him taking a bigger role this year. If we just be patient and do nothing we could really set ourself up for the future. The team would probably end up 6th in the central, maybe 5th if they scratch and crawl for it. We could end up getting a good pick and bolster our young talent from that. I see buff retiring as a blessing in disguise.

Edit: after seeing the game last night I think jets should really give Niku and Morrissey a long look as the top pair.

That defense sucks without Byfuglien.

Fans and players will "revolt" if the Jets who have cap space don't try to get Dman help. Even short term help is necessary. Just can't waste the season with this group.

I agree with this strategy completely. Especially after last night's game I'd give JMo Niku a really long look as the top pair. Then go Kulikov Pionk and Beaulieu Poolman (who is also looking good). The D will be young and unproven but that doesn't mean that they'll be bad.

If Buff retires it eliminates a lot of the pressure to win this season before he declines or retires. Keep the cap space unless we can pry a 1st round pick from a team needing to get their RFA signed, like Calgary. Go young with the D and see what we have.

Laine overpaid. Only one good month last season.

Yeah I know that. But making trades out of reaction could leave us with a hall for larsson situation.

Thinking long term here, lock him up so you don’t pay 10+ in 2 years. Have faith in jets coaching staff to allow him to flourish into the 50 goal scorer he is.

If fans really cared they’d listen to Chevy and have faith in his plan. They’d rather see him come out and say okay we’re gonna take a year to retool and come back better than ever than make a hall for larsson type trade.

So happy someone understands this concept. I think it makes sense for the team long term.

I'm not saying going all in on a short term deal. But at some time there will be competent Dmen avaialble to supplement what you have now. The "tanking" theory is kinda ridiculous by some many Jets fans. Even with a tank you pick 12th not 22nd. Is moving up 10 places worth a miserable season.? How does it help you in 2020/21.

I mean I don’t think we should tank by any means, what I think is that we should roll with what we have and not make any rash decisions. I’d rather see Chevy do nothing and see where we’re at with what we have than make a trade with laine and have it end up like hall for larsson. What I’m suggesting is more to allow for the young guys to gain some valuable experience and set ourselves up for the future, a 12th pick would be great, might not be franchise changing but it all helps. I’d rather Chevy retool a little this year and extend the window into the future than rush for one last push this year and have not a lot of assets left over.

I

Some teams have big cap issues. There might be high priced veterans that they want to get rid for cap reasons the Jets can fit in....at virtually no trade price.
