Yes...
There wasn't even any defenceman even making $8m until Subban signed his contract four years ago.

Subban took a 2 year bridge but was still only 25 when he signed his deal so only 2.5 years older than Chabot. At the time Subban's deal was the highest for a D-man and was a whopping 13% of the Cap.

So I checked and Duncan Keith got 13 year 72 million contract after his ELEC.

so lower AAV, and probably lower %, but higher total $?

Also wasn't technically coming off his ELC i dont think.

Other notables include:
- Bouwmeester signing with CGY in 2010 after 4 seasons, signed 5 years at 11.76% of cap.
- Brian Campbell after 4-ish seasons, signed for FLA in 2008, for 8 years at 12.6% of cap.
- More of a veteran, but after six season, Chara signed with BOS for a mammoth 17% of the cap in 2006. This may be record for highest %?
- And who could forget the Weber contract. Also more of a veteran after six season, Weber signed his 14 year (that's insanity), deal at 13.1% of cap in 2012. How did NSH not get penalized for that, I guess because it was an offer sheet. Even more outrageous than the Kovalchuk contract though. Kovalchuk was also 16% of cap coming off his ELC.

Anyone know the highest ever % of cap contract signed? From what I see its Jagr back when he signed in 2001 with WSH, his contract was 7 years and 20.3% of cap. Is that the highest?

This is a good deal all around. Chabot may not have a ton of NHL experience under his belt, but he has had very significant stretches where he has looked like this level of player or better, and this contract buys all of his prime years. That seems like a very smart bet.

Ekblad got a deal that was bigger than this (in cap hit percentage), that was completely a bet on his development, he never had any stretches where he really looked like a top tier #1 D, and still hasn't. Provorov hasn't really shown as much either, and his deal is very comparable when you factor in the extra two years UFA years purchased.

The bet has some potential to not work out, but he gets another full year of development and the cap rising before this deal even kicks in, so that likely increases the chances this deal becomes worth it, even if Chabot can't live up to the potential he showed in the first half of last year.

Aside from the buying of future years, it's important to see Ottawa sending a message that they are investing dollars now into the future. Both this, and the Colin White deal cost real money now, but are extremely likely to be value deals by the time this team is competitive, allowing them to spend to supplement their stars. Obviously there is a long way to go, but after the year they had last year, it's important to show that they do have at least some vision and optimism for the future.

Regardless of whom may have said it, facts are facts..... Sens will win [another] cup before the Leafs end their cup drought.

Facts are facts ... you have a win your first cup before you can win [another] cup ....

As per the 2010 NHL Media Guide:

"The original Senators organization, also known as the Ottawa Hockey Club, won the Stanley Cup eleven times, not the current franchise founded in 1992. Neither the NHL or the Senators claim the current Senators to be a continuation of the original organization or franchise. The awards, statistics and championships of both eras are kept separate and the NHL franchise founding date of the current Senators is in 1992".

Zero cups ... that's a pretty long drought.

Quite the cap-hit for someone with 3 months of top-4 quality under his belt.

Hopefully it pans out for Ottawa ... otherwise this will be the next Bobby Ryan contract.

I can't believe in signed.

I literately haven't been this optimistic about the Sens since they made it to conferences finals. (2+years ago)

Adds to a very good summer by Ottawa after White's long term and Zaitsev (5 years on the deal) acquisition for a player who wanted out. They now have pieces locked long term to start building and, hopefully for the few remaining fans of the team, go into the fun part of the rebuild.

LMAO ... if you don't recall ... Bobby Ryan was also EXTREMELY HYPED when he was Chabot's age.

Why do you think Ryan got such a massive contract?

So ya ... he better prove himself or he'll be the next Ryan.

It's really not much of a discount is it?

It's $8,000,000 ... to a guy with one 25 point season and one 55 point season.
