How Does Retirement Affect Cap Status?

What happens to a player's cap hit when he retires? I am thinking particularly of Dustin Byfuglien's situation.

if buff retires, his cap hit goes with him and the contract basically becomes voided until he comes back.

there were rare cases on contracts signed a few years ago that would trigger a recapture penalty if a player retired early, for example nashville with weber, kings with richards, nucks with bobby loo. but most contracts dont have those.
