I'd do Rask for Backes straight up. Both have $12m in salary remaining, it's just spread out over 3 years vs. 2 years which I think meets both team's needs perfectly.

Johnson has a lower cap hit but costs you $250,000 in real money over the course of the contract. So you're getting a second and a third for the retention plus a quarter of a million dollars. You end up with a cap hit of $5MM for 4 years instead of $4MM for 3 years, which has no practical effect on your team since you're not that near the cap ceiling. You pay out $17.5MM instead of $12MM. Meanwhile, you get a second and a third, which together could result in an actual NHL roster player. The offer is pretty good, but I'd hold out for a retention in the $1MM-$1.25MM range.

You should jump at this offer. You pay Backes a total of $4 million instead of Rask $12 million; the cap hit is just Monopoly money since you're not near the cap. AND, you get a third-round pick!

Cap hits do NOT equal salary! Backes has only $4 million in salary remaining because Boston has already paid his signing bonus this year. The remaining real money due on his contact is $4 million. Meanwhile, Rask's contract has no signing bonuses involved, so he's due $12 million in actual dollars.

Some retention is fair if you want those two nice draft picks, but it should be closer to a million dollars. Your team really could use the draft picks.

Considering what Toronto paid to dump Marleau (who isn't as bad as Rask)... a lot.

The big issue with us acquiring JJ is that we'll have to pay Kaprizov, Kunin, Donato, Fiala, Greenway, Brodin, and possibly Dubnyk and Boldy as well as figure out what the hell we are going to do for a 1C by the time JJ's contract is off the books. If we're acquiring another dump, it almost has to be one with less term but a high cap hit. I'd love the picks, but acquiring JJ makes an already sticky situation much stickier...

True, but Minnesota and Boston aren't teams that cash seems to be an issue. Leipold would probably be happier paying less cash for a guy to sit in the press box but he's not Melnyk so it wouldn't be a motivating factor imo.

Edit: Sorry, meant salary cap due in my original post not salary. I was confused why you stressed actual cash when it was my mistake to start with. Oops.

Wild fans are all acting like Rask completely sucks

Yeah he had a bad season and wasn't good this year but he's 26 and can bounce back if he plays with the good guys on a good line. Just need to find the right fit.

Rask can't skate. He didn't work with the Wilds skating expert coach this summer even though it was recommended by the head coach and GM. He failed the training camp skate test badly. He clearly didn't do the work this summer to get better. Which means, it's not worth waiting for him. Time to cut bait.

He has never had a great season. His best seasons were after Eric Staal left Carolina and before Aho took off and those were 40ish point seasons playing top 6 minutes. He'll never see that again and Fenton was a moron for thinking he might just need a change of scenery to get back to that.

He does, though. He's never going to score 20 goals again. He has good vision in the offensive zone (probably his best tool in his kit), he can make decent passes, and his shot is decent, but he looks lost in his own zone and his transition game is horrendous since it looks like he's skating through wet cement out there and the puck gets stripped from him before he can do anything with it. The guy has to be one of the slowest skaters I can remember seeing in quite some time. It's almost painful to watch. I'm sure he'd blow past me if I raced him, but relative to NHL'ers he's probably 3 standard deviations away from the mean skater. On paper I think he'd be alright if he's put with slow skating linemates and basically only used in offensive situations, but good luck finding that type of situation for him in reality. He was given the opportunity to stay in MN all offseason and work with our skating coach to improve his stride and try to give him a shot at bigger minutes, but from the sounds of it he turned that down and went back to Sweden. Boudreau is not happy about that and there's talk of him being placed on waivers (probably not to start the year, but maybe in a few months). It just seems like he has pretty much thrown in the towel at being a top 6 guy again and doesn't seem to care enough to put in the work.

Not good then. At least, here, David Backes does everything to keep his spot even through he knows he isn't a regular anymore. Obviously, a great leader also so
