third Pair is optional for those 12 minutes a night....

and for Team in total :

Next year overhaul of D will show if TML can walk all the way, tho it will be much tougher with the Premium contracts handed out, so 13-15M ( dependant on Marner AAV ) will be on disposal to get three Ds and that money wont bring in Elite ones, but im fine with above average ones also. I think Muzzin will be resigned ( they lost 1st and 2 x 2nds for him, so i dont think they will just let him walk ) and if we could land Hamonic at 5M i would be just fine.

Kadri - Kerfoot...............LOSS ( slight )....................... tho kid is younger, same production and at least he will play thru Playoffs
Gardiner - Rielly.............STATUS QUO........................but rental
Zaitsev - Ceci.....................LOSS ( slight )......................but one year instead of four
Marleau - Spezza............STATUS QUO.......................but money dumped for Marner
Brown - Wilson..................LOSS..................................descirebed above
Hainsey - Harpur.....................cant decide..........................as much as Hainsey sucked for last two years
Ozhiganov - Schmaltz.............cant decide..........................i didnt find Ozhiganov such a fail, i liked the kid tho he proly hoped he will pull Zaitsev
Ennis - Åberg......................BETTER.............................hes a Swede, so whatever he does....
Lindholm - Shore....................cant decide...............
xxxxxxx - Agostino...............BETTER....................more ppl to pick out from the better
xxxxxxx - Mikheyev..............complete mistery....................i still wonder how all of you can put him above everyone else thats waiting in line for that one spot

But again.....its a lot about luck too, the roster this Season after TDL was sufficient to make it to the Finals also, they just felt short i would say. And as always what im saying.....the main things that need to be adressed are 8th in PP, 16th in PK, 20 in GAA, 24th in SAA and 27th in SCAA. Till then.....

couple things.
1. I never said Marleau couldn't get moved. I said that Toronto couldn't pay his bonus and then trade him to a team so that they could buy him out. That's just a fact. It's like saying that a team isn't allowed to have 18 skaters on the ice at one time. It's just a fact.
2. You're over the cap and two guys short of a full roster. The D still stinks. You can laugh if you really want to, but you might want to be a bit more cautious.

Dermott should eat his minutes, and Ceci can make a simple breakout pass, something neither Hainsey or Zaitsev could do.

Your defense is as bad as last yeeat my friend. If ceci is on your first pair maple leafs will get kick out again in first round. And barrie is a great offensive defenseman bit defensively he is as good as gardiner. I don’t know on ehat you have based your analysis but you should have a second opinion.

I'm not sure how you get defense is improved. I mean it wasn't great last year, but this is no better if not worse.
Is Spezza going to actually make the team. I mean he almost has to right? They can't unload that contract in anyway but a trade and he's got a NTC.
I don't know, that was a bad signing and a rookie mistake. The only place for him is on the 4th line and he's doesn't strike me as the guy who wants to go out there and do the grunt work. You didn't find the next Matt Cullen there to come play that role.

I wouldn't say they improved on D. Yes, Barrie is a good player but I remember him being pretty "meh" in his own zone. He shines offensively and in the transition game, but there are many better players in their own zone in the league. Ottawa fans have been clamoring to get rid of Ceci so take that for what you will. It is impressive that he signed Matthews, Marner, and Nylander, though. I thought they'd for sure have to trade one of them.

Ceci stood out as bad on the worst team in the league last year.

Barrie is a good player, but Zaitsev is better than he is defensively.

Who plays the right side better... gardiner or Barrie?

I will hold judgement on ceci till the season starts.

Are we nitpicking now ? You know what i ment......you can also have three Top LHD in each line and patch RHDs...effectivly-wise pretty much the same......and for the mentioned ones, all three are to unconsistent in their own zone, so no upgrade from my point of view, only what will save him is Muzzin covering his a.s.....same for Ceci next to Rielly, even Hainsey sparked some decency playing there....

There's no question that Barrie is better offensively and a better puck mover than Gardiner but the Leafs issues didn't have anything to do with offensive and everything to do with defense.

You and I have been repeating the same thing about Ceci. It's fascinating that people think a player can't be different than he's shown with a past organization.

Not claiming Ceci will be good. He just needs to be steady, that's all.

An objective comparison of the D, based on team adjusted Evolving Hockey ensemble models, averaged over the past 5 years (past 3 for Zaitsev):

Defense: Gardiner (2.02) > Muzzin (1.83) > Hainsey (-1.1) > Ceci (-1.46) > Barrie (-1.72) > Zaisev (-2.07) > Rielly (-4.42)
Offense: Barrie (4.46) > Rielly (3.2) > Gardiner (2.5) > Muzzin (-0.23) > Hainsey (-0.42) > Ceci (-2.14) > Zaitsev (-2.4)

For comparison, Hedman has an EV offense of 6.56 and an EV defense of 1.42.

So, Dubas traded Zaitsev for Ceci. Ceci is better, offensively and defensively.
He replaced Gardiner with Barrie. Barrie is better offensively and shoots from the right, but weaker defensively.
Hainsey is gone, and replaced by a younger player, whose productivity is yet to be known.

Overall, it's a slight improvement.
